Before i begin my mini yap sesh, let’s establish what Atheism is first.
Atheism is opposed to Theism, the idea of believing in a God (monotheism) or multiple Gods (polytheism). Atheism is by definition the lack of belief in the existence of a God or Gods.
Let’s begin.
Atheism used to be widely frowned upon, thought of as a satanic idea, really. Most people were often raised into having religious beliefs. But times are changing now.
People don't like the idea of being controlled. That's why atheism is possible now.
Let me take you a little bit back in history.
When monarchies were still everywhere and there were no democracies and modern governments (Before the French Revolution), back then there was a theory of 'divine right to rule', it was believed that the kings and queens were chosen by Gods themselves. People couldn't accept the idea that somebody, who is a human, just like them, capable of the same things that they are capable of, can rule over them. That's why they started to think of the kings as the higher beings. As society progressed, we built modern governments, where clearly set procedures and the constitution defines what will be done and what will not be done. The society won't go into chaos without religion anymore. Religion is obviously still important but to a lesser extent. That is what even allows people to follow atheism.
Now, in my opinion, religion only exists to allow the society to exist without chaos. It was based on the idea that morals aren't objective.
You can't objectively say that murder is wrong because it isn't. It's a subjective opinion. Even if logical deductions could be made which justified certain morals, most ordinary people can't be expected to follow them. That's why religion is important. People like to associate themselves with a community where they preach a supposed almighty, omnipotent being, so that society could function in an orderly fashion.
In addition, I’d also say religion purely exists for control over the majority as well.
The majority is the poor. They take up most of us, that’s for sure. I do wonder why they haven’t revolted against mankind for better conditions..
No, i don’t actually. I very well know why.
Humans love hope, they strive off it, in fact.
Those in power tell the poor if they behave, they will reach a destination of paradise once they die, that if they’re good people, they ascend into Heaven. How interesting, really.
Religion is control and hope.
This was a risky post, thanks for reading.

When you say Religion in the modern age only exists for control for the rich and powerful, how so? maybe in the sense of the past but not reflective of the present. The ones in power currently actively stand against the teaching of the bible, Many actively want to rebel againist them, In Muslim majority countries you can ask anyone about their leader and they would answer that they aren’t satisfied. For a recent example, Syria overthrew their tyrant Bashar al assad after a decades long civil war, They see him as a Taghut (someone who rules besides the rules of God) so I heavily disagree on the notion that religion is a tool for control over the common folk by the rich and powerful. While Religion is used for hope, thats not only what its used for, its also for discipline and guidance. Even if you leave religion altogether you still need to find some ways to cope with life such as consumerism, drug consumption or any style of self pleasure. Its human nature to distract yourself from life

i believe religion is in itself a mean of control of the masses. while initially being structured on the hope of salvation and as a fast and easy answer to various inexplicable happenings (death, natural phenomena, etc), its structure (based on the submission to a higher authority) became easily exploitable by people who yearned for power. i agree on the fact that religion became less important with the establishment of legal-rational power (as weber would call it) and modern democracies, in which the laws are followed because they’re decided by the majority of the population and correctly and inevitably enforced, and not because of some divine law. hobbes would say that “ius positivum” killed god (even though i don’t completely agree with a fully subjective interpretation of morality).
I agree with everything you’ve just said lol. and yes, the part about morality being subjective may not stand by everyone’s beliefs, as it only recently aligned with mine.
ima add you btw !! ^_^
