notable links included this week. :) have a good time and don't forget to LIKE AND SUBSCRObE
The Dismemberment Plan - The Dismemberment Plan is Terrified(1997)
genre: NOISY INDIE SASS ROCK WHATEVER (I would call it)
FFO: Brainiac, Jets to Brazil
rating: 8/10
this album is wonderfully wacky and offputting, yet put together. like a true pretty ass weird girl. The Dismemberment Plan are a bunch of freaks you can't ignore, yet somehow highly endearing. I've never listened to emergency & I very closely, but in a similar vein this album is offbeat as well as lyrically if not instrumentally. emegency & I feels a little more succinct than this album, like they added punctuation in the later album. TDPIT feels more hectic and all over the place, as well as bratty, which is why I'm categorizing it as sass. They even have a song called "Onward, Fat Girl". I would say it is less discordant than emergency & I, at its worst. Songs I would recommend: do the standing still, manipulate me, academy award
Lealani - Fantastic Planet (2019)
genre: synth pop, indietronica
FFO: Oklou, CHVRCHES, Phantogram
rating: 7/10
This album contains indie beats with synthesizers used in new and interesting ways. I had never heard the dubstep "WUB WUB WUB" used quite like this (miniscule) though admittedly I have not been following the indie scene closely for a while now. I have developed new methods of finding music since my time as an Indie Cindy... (The loser alone in my bedroom meter is off the charts!) Anyway this album is quite fun and satisfying as if it were a standard lunch of protein, carbs, fats, and micronutrients, and nestles itself squarely within your ears. I will mention that I think this is a stab at a concept album, referencing the movie Fantastic Planet, but I'm not a fan of dissecting lyrics so I'm not suited to analyze that. In some cases it is a bit bland, with similar vocal deliveries on pretty much every song and lacking in variance of texture, song to song. This takes the amount of fun from a truckload full to just a platter, but make no mistake it is worth consuming. songs I would recommend: miniscule, floating, the night
New Found Glory - Sticks and Stones (2002)
genre: pop punk, power pop
FFO: fall out boy, blink-182
rating: 8/10
The first half of this album puts the "punk" in pop punk, at least in terms of musicality. Many of the beginning songs are hard and fast, in my opinion just how EVERY album should open... the attitude of this album is predictably juvenile for this era of pop punk, but what would you expect from a bunch of early and mid-20's dudes in the early 2000's? I mean just look up a photo of the band and you'll see that they weren't told the tooth fairy wasn't real until the ripe age of 16. Would you consider this 3rd wave emo or something worse? I consider it a great album, though not my favorite from NFG. I much prefer what I grew up on, Catalyst. if you can get past the nasally vocals, which are a noteworthy tenet of New Found Glory's music, I think this album begins with a pretty big walloping punch but mellows out by the end. I guess that's why the latter half doesn't grab me as much. I think a pop punk album should be an album of openers, hard and fast throughout. What are you doing adopting a mall punk attitude and not delivering punchy jams? songs I would recommend: head on collision, understatement, something I call personality
Tinashe - BB/ANG3L (2023)
genre: alternative r&b, pop rap
FFO: shygirl, FKA twigs
rating: 7/10
I really wanted to love this whole album but the first thing you should know about me is that I love a Jaunty Little Number over anything else. I have been known to have 'a tempo'. This album boasts a fourth of july show in the first half with those danceable beats I crave, but peters out about halfway through "Uh Huh" before finishing strong with a finale of "tightrope". the in-between is just sort of dim and underwhelming. they started off with a cowboy hat! (an ode to fireworks) I just really liked the cowboy hat. perhaps a true critic would call this a complete work of art for its variance in beats, but I call it a disappointment. another thing you should know about me is I possess modern pop sensibilities, so I judge everything based on that feeling. I can't really employ that with everything unfortunately, especially r&b. so take my ratings with a grain of salt, is all I'm saying. songs I would recommend: talk to me nice, needs, treason
i love tinashe she's soo
