fashion blog ep. 4: SWAG

I think it's safe to say that, lately, we've all witnessed a return of the word "swag" in popularity and everyday conversations. But what does swag mean? when can you really consider yourself to be swag?

we can track the origins of the word with a degree of certainty back to 18th century English, in which it was used to refer to "a swinging bag". in slang, its meaning changed to that of "loot" or a bag full of stolen goods. according toΒ Oxford dictionary, the word may have Scandinavian origins, coming from "svagger", but a common misconception about it is that it comes from an acronym originating in 60s Hollywood, standing for "secretly we are gay". this is nothing but a folk belief.

but what does swag mean now? another misconception is that one can be swag only by dressing a certain way or in a specific style. however, swag actually means "carrying something with confidence" and is not directly related to the clothes themselves, but rather the attitude of the person wearing them. my personal interpretation of the term is that, when it's used in relation to a specific piece, it can mean how different and unusual that piece is.

how do y'all interpret the word swag? let me know!
