if someone lived alone in outer space, like actually in space with zero society, no Instagram, no boys, no beauty standards, do you really think they’d suddenly wake up one day and go, “Hmm... my lips need to be plumper”? No! That thought wouldn’t even exist.
Like, unless it was for medical reasons or gender-affirming care, I don’t believe anyone would naturally come to the conclusion that they need cosmetic surgery. These beauty “flaws” we notice? Society literally uploaded those into our brains.
So when people say, “I’m getting lip filler for meee,” I’m like, girl, be fr. You’re doing it for the version of “you” that society created. And that’s okay! Honestly, do what makes you feel hot. Just don’t pretend it’s 100% your own thought in a vacuum. Because if you were vibing in space all alone with your cute little space helmet, you’d probably think your lips were adorable just as they are.
Also, I think the reason people get so defensive about this take is because the idea that insecurity isn’t natural feels like an attack on their entire identity. Like… they literally can’t imagine a world where you don’t look in the mirror and pick yourself apart. It’s almost scary to them, because that would mean their “personal” choices, the things they thought were fully theirs, might’ve actually been planted there. That’s a lot to unpack, and not everyone’s ready for it.
Plus, insecurity is kind of a social currency now, especially for women. Like, you ever notice how when one friend says, “Ugh, I hate my thighs,” another will jump in with, “Girl, I hate my arms”? It’s like a bonding ritual. You show your vulnerability so you don’t seem arrogant or “too confident.” It makes you more relatable.
We don’t even realize we’re doing it, but it’s baked into the culture. You have to humble yourself, especially if you’re pretty, so people will like you. And over time, that becomes real. You actually start believing there’s something wrong with you, even if you never felt that way before.
