Hello! I recently (over the last month) have been dipping my toes into the hellenic polytheism religion. It's been going very well and I've discovered so many things and it's so cool!! But I have some questions, and I was hoping that someone could maybe answer them :]
1: is there a substitute for veiling if your school doesn't allow you to wear head coverings?
2: what can I put on an altar as a substitute for candles?
3: how should I carry around a travel altar (basically an altar in an Altoids tin)?
4: how will I know if I'm wearing a veil correctly (also can I wear it while exercising?)?
5: can I put crystals on an altar if I don't know what they are (or if they just look like regular rocks)?
6: what's the best place to put an altar?
7: how do I charge my veil if I don't have essential oils? (I've been searching it up and everything says to use essential oils)
8: when should I wear a veil/what's the most appropriate time to wear a veil?
9: how much of my life should revolve around the Gods and religion in general?
And before anyone asks: yes, I have tried searching these up. I have even gone to reddit but I really only got vague answers from google searches :/
I think that's all for now, I'll update/edit this if I have anymore questions. If anyone can help me out it would be super helpful! :]
(questions 1-9 written on 4/3/25)
Have a good day! -Clover <3

Hello!!
First off, I want to mention that there is a difference between paganism and witchcraft. Based on your questions, it seems that you're kinda conflating the two.
Veiling, travel altar, crystals, etc are not necessary to worship the Theoi. All you need is to physically cleanse yourself before every prayer and build a relationship with them.
To answer your questions --->
Veiling
- Veiling is not necessary or called for, so there isn't a "substitute". If your school doesn't allow you to wear head coverings, that's a big concern. You have the right to practice your religion and faith. You can veil for modesty, protection, or simply because you want to. The idea of "charging" your veil comes from witchcraft. If you prefer, you can simply pray over your veil before putting it on. Essential oils are not needed. As veiling is not necessary in worship, it's up to you to decide when you would like to veil. You can veil for modesty, spiritual protection, or simply because you want to. Some people veil when they are going to pray, or they wear it all the time. Again, it's up to you!
Altar
- An altar is also not necessary, but you may feel called to make it. Candles aren't really needed, so just use what you have. An altar is a sacred space for you to worship. So again, no candles are necessary; just put whatever offerings you have or incense. Also, it's YOUR altar; you want to put things there that you feel connected to, so if you don't know what a crystal is, you should have an understanding of it first, before putting it in your sacred space. You can simply put a travel altar in your bag or anywhere. And again, an altar isn't necessary, including a travel altar. All you need is YOU.
It's best to place an altar in a private, quiet space where you can meditate and be with the gods.
Praciticng
- How much your life revolves around the Gods and the religion in general is up to you. As it seems you're a beginner, I would advise start praying morning and evening to the household Gods. I highly recommend getting the book Hellenic Polytheism: Household Worship and to further research on the following --->
- Look into important Gods in household worship. These are Zeus, Hestia, and Agathos Daimon. Understand the importance of worshipping them
- Pillars of Hellenismos
- How to pray (formating a prayer and posture)
Please keep in mind that this is just a foundation. You don't necessarily have to follow the formate/posture of the prayer to a tea.
Ooohh ok! This clears up so much thank you so much! ;-;
