tariffs work great when your country manufactures something at a slightly higher cost than other countries can.

Lets just randomly use socks as an example. The us can make socks for 25 cents a pair while China can make them for 20 cents a pair. If the government says okay we will put a 6 cents tariff on socks coming from China now the us socks are actually 1 cent cheaper and people will be more likely to buy american made socks.

The problem is we aren't doing that which would be a targeted tariff what we are doing is blanket tariffs.

if the us doesn't make socks anyway then there will be no cheaper american made alternative and they end result is everyone now has to pay more for their socks.

the argument they are making is it will bring jobs back to this country but there are numerous problems with that theory.

First of off it takes years and sometimes even decades to open a factory so even if we wanted to bring these jobs back it cant happen overnight.

Second most of the companies are global companies who sell their goods across the whole world. This means it will not be financially viable to move manufacturing to the us because their goods will cost too much to sell elsewhere as the cost of operating in the us is much higher than the rest of the world

Third there is a reason why we moved away from manufacturing and sent it to developing countries and that's because manufacturing isnt where the money is.

So if the us doesn't benefit from it why are they doing it? They main theory is they are trying to artificially create a recession to further transfer more money and power to the top 1 percent.

I gotta be honest though i dont think that's going to happen this time. I think everyone is going to take a hit on this including the 1 percent and this will set our country back decades. Even if we decide to reverse everything we already sent a message to the whole world that the us is not safe to do business with.

We are going to feel the pain of this for years to come
