My Hair Timeline (Circa. 2003 - 2024)

I plan on turning this into a more detailed YouTube video in the future, but for now, here’s a blog post on my hair evolution (with photos!) for kicks. Feel free to drop a comment on which style's your favorite! ^_^

≤ 2003 - 2007

At birth, I had light blonde hair, which my mother would go on to cut a straight-across fringe into as it'd grow out.

2007 - 2009

As the years went on, my hair became darker and I chose to pursue a side-part.

2009 - 2010

I idolized Miley Cyrus in 2009, so naturally, I was inspired to continue growing my hair out like hers.

2010 - April 2012

In an unexpected turn of events, I entered my emo phase. When I talked to a hair stylist about the cut I wanted, she laid down the groundwork for shaping and layering my hair, but she wouldn’t touch my fringe for whatever reason. I had to cut it myself with kitchen shears. I also wanted my hair dyed black, but my mother gave me pushback for it. We compromised on a deeper caramel color that didn’t add much.

April - December 2012

I continued to cut my own fringe and face-framing pieces at home. I didn’t have much motivation to style it, so I often kept it my natural texture.

December 2012 - August 2013

I took the leap and chopped half of the length of my hair off and dyed it burgundy, inspired by Kairi (Kingdom Hearts). I don’t have much documentation of this, but it was one of my favorite colors for the longest time, and I was over the moon to finally say I had an unnatural color done.

August - December 2013

The red had nearly completely faded from my hair, so instead of having it re-dyed the same color, I had it done half-and-half—this time inspired by Chi-chan (a Nico Nico Douga odorite). The upper half was bleached blonde, whereas the lower half was dark brown. The blonde looked significantly less yellow in person.

December 2013 - April 2015

I found out I had some similarities to Death The Kid in the sense that living with asymmetry—in this case, my hair color—got on my nerves. I dyed it a solid dark brown in response.

I lived in this brown hair for over a year without any touch-ups. Since I didn't have a color filler done between sessions, the previously bleached half of my hair faded from a deep, rich brown to a slightly lighter, warmer color match of my natural hair in the span of a few months. I cut my fringe once again, although this was pretty short lived.

April - December 2015

I bought my first box of dye for my birthday and finally got the black hair of 10-year-old me's dreams.

December 2015 - April 2016

I maintained the black with consistent touch-ups until I could no longer afford the upkeep. I wanted to go to a medium brown to ease my regrowth into, but was too scared to lift the dye out of my hair by myself. I opted for filling in my current regrowth with brown instead. Not to boast too much, but I basically did the Billie Eilish thing before it was cool. It’s also worth pointing out that my hair grew a significant amount by then.

April 2016 - April 2017

I continued to grow my hair with the goal of it reaching my waist. I not only eventually achieved this, but I also had it dyed a dark brown to caramel ombre. I believed it was poetic, as I was going through a similar phase of emerging from proverbial darkness into light.

April 2017 - March 17, 2018

I had my hair dyed blue with purple streaks. This ended up being one of my absolute favorite colors on me.

I had the color retouched in August, in which I also cut several inches off of my hair.

March 17, 2018 - March 27, 2018

Sometime early 2018, I came to the realization that I wanted my hair to be a natural color again in time for prom and graduation. I had as much of the blue lifted from my hair as possible before covering it in brown.

March 27 - October 2018

This ended up not working out as well as I’d hoped, so I went back into the salon for a follow-up, where I had a temporary red layered over the brown as a color corrector.

October 2018 - April 2019

I went to my partner’s mom (a hair stylist, although she wasn’t trained much in coloring at the time) to be lightened to blonde. It looks decent here minus the green patches poking through, but the application was uneven and splotchy in reality. I insisted on curling my hair and tucking it beneath hats to hide any mistakes at all times. This is possibly the most damaged and funky my hair has ever been, but it could’ve been much worse.

April 2019 - February 2020

I made the executive decision to chop off all of my overly processed hair, which meant the last remnants of blue/green as well. I went back to my usual stylist and had my regrowth dyed rose gold, with my lightened tips refined and colored in a soft rosy pink. Again, this is one of my favorite colors I’ve ever done, but it didn’t last long even with the help of color depositing shampoo.

By December, the rose gold faded to my natural color, whereas the pink faded into a strawberry blonde.

February 2020 - October 2022

In 2020, I discovered that I finally was growing tired of being a high-maintenance hair gal. The idea of being able to wash and go became more appealing by the day. I grabbed a box of dye that seemed close enough to my natural color and applied it to my entire head.

I kept my natural color for the next 3 years, all the while choosing to experiment with subtle at-home haircuts. It started with keeping my hair at shoulder length and texturizing my layers in October 2020. Then a wolfcut in June 2021, a fringe in August 2022, and a mullet a month later in September.

October 2022 - August 2023

I had my first pixie, which only became shorter by Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then March the following year.

August - September 2023

I dyed my hair burgundy without any prior lightening treatment. I didn’t do it to shamefully hide my natural color this time, but to fulfill an old childhood dream 2010 me had—to dye my hair with Manic Panic.

.

September 2023 - June 2024

The burgundy dulled out significantly, and I decided on coloring over it with auburn box dye. From that point on, I cut my hair monthly and dyed it bi-monthly to keep that exact style.

June - November 2024

This all stopped when I chose to entertain curiosity and buzzed all of my hair off.

From then on, I’ve been growing my hair out with the exception of one trim in November. The last update photo I’d taken was shortly afterward, but it’s grown even more since then.

Present

It’s in a weird, mullet-y stage now, so I’m waiting for a good opportunity where it doesn’t look so hillbilly before I update next. Until further notice, the plan is to grow it out long enough to shape it back into my October 2020 style, but I may revisit my April 2019 bob in the meantime as a transitional style once my layers come in more.
