Just be honest. Let them know how much you appreciate the relationship the way it is, that you don't see it progressing beyond friendship. Also tell them that you prefer being single for whatever the reason; school, family, work, etc.
You're not obligated to date everyone who confesses to you. I mean, you can, but that'd be weird and tiring.
Hopefully they're mature enough to realize that you're not being an asshole for turning them down. If they do, then that's a them problem, not yours. However, it is understandable if their ego gets hurt a bit.
Rejection is never an nice feeling, but it's part of life:
Rejection letter from colleges and universities, rejection letters from jobs, rejection from a person you're interested in...

He shouldn't feel ashamed. He took a chance and went for it. It takes guts to put yourself out there, ya know? People should know going in that it's a fifty fifty chance of success. The odds simply weren't in his favor this time. There will be other times. Hope you can remain friends though.

bruh why not just go for a ride and if it doesn't work out then it wasn't meant to be. Idk why people have to overcomplicate things like this and if you are already taken then just turn him or her down.
