I have a gig in 2 days. Normally, I would be dreading it. However, for some reason, I seem to be feeling completely empty in regards to it. Outside of thinking about that, I have been demoing this one song, very pop rock sounding, with a little bit of alternative influence. I've been listening to a lot of Cheap Trick and a lot of blue album-era Weezer. I don't really have a name for this song. However, I'm sure I'll think of one in the future.
I spent a lot of today going through three old songs I recorded. One was called "Random Jam", the other was "Untitled Sample Song" and the third and final song was a cover of "Lounge Act" by Nirvana. For "Random Jam", I basically found an old recording I did of the song and re-mixed that, as well as changed the amplification settings on it so it's using a Fender '73 Twin Reverb Impulse Response instead of BIAS FX's "Legally Distinct Fender Twin Reverb". For "Untitled Sample Song", I also went back to the original recording and basically re-mixed it. However, instead of using a Soldano SLO 100 Impulse Response (Which would have set me back financially), I decided to use a community made version which I found. "Lounge Act" is a bit of a hard one to explain. But trying is soemthing I seem to be good at, so I shall make an attempt.
Lounge Act uses the Bass, Drums and Vocal stems from the original master recording. Part of me has done this because I didn't want to make an attempt at playing a bastardised version of the song. The other part is because this cover also serves as an experiment for double tracking; something that was done on Nirvana's Nevermind (1991) album for Kurt Cobain's (1967-1994) guitars and also his vocals. While I was proud with how my guitars sounded, I was getting bored of hearing Cobain's vocals over and over again with no edits being made whatsoever, so I decided that I wanted to mess around with them a little. I added some distorted vocals and I even pitch shifted a certain part of Kurt's vocals, giving off a water-like chorus effect.
Something I have neglected to mention is that I have been creating what I can only describe as liner notes for this portfolio. I want to be able to give the person viewing the portfolio a description of why I chose the song I chose and how I recorded the tracks; what instruments I used, what methods of recording I used, what VSTs and what BPM it's in.
