Fish of the Day 60 - I got that fur bearing trout in me

Today's fish of the day is the fur bearing trout!

Fact Check: Is the fur trout real or fake? Viral online pictures debunked

Fur bearing trout facts:

- Their "fur" is actually setae, which you may remember if you read the yeti crab entry. However, their setae is much thicker, effectively preserving heat in their very cold habitat.

- For a long time, the only evidence of these fish existing was in old Inuit stories passed down through generations. The scientists that did believe in it's existance theorized that these fish would grow seaweed or algae on themselves as a makeshift coat. They live extremely deep in artic waters, deep enough that the plant would not recieve enough sunlight to create the green pigment, which would explain the white colour. However, this theory was very short lived, as a specimin was found a few years after it was proposed.

- We still have not successfully found a living specimin, making the knowledge on this fish very limited.

- Scientists believe that these are mutated sea trout (brown trout) which were unable to reach freshwater to spawn.

Do you got that fur bearing trout in you? I think I do!! Im very sad that we dont know much about them, I was originally expecting to find much more information. Considering we have more advanced technology, im sure we'll find out more soon, and i'll be able to rewrite this!
