im convinced none of you actually know what gatekeeping is. somebody saying youre not a real (insert subculture here) isnt gatekeeping, thats just somebody saying words. it doesnt prevent you from doing anything. if people being mean to you prevents you from doing stuff then maybe you just lack a backbone. back in ye olden times being alternative meant getting bullied and socially ostracized - that was just part of it. stop blaming other people for your own mental hang ups. you hold the key to your own prison you royal dipshit

Gatekeeping has always been just saying words tho, no? Kinda don't get what's the argument being made here
gatekeeping (when it comes to subculture) is when somebody does something to prevent you from participating in an activity. for example: you asking where an event is or what the name of a song is and they refuse to tell you. or keeping resources private for no reason other than they dont want more people to know about it
somebody saying “youre not a real [insert subculture here] because you dress wrong / listen to the wrong music / whatever” doesnt actually prevent you from doing anything. being called a poser or a newgen or whatever is also not gatekeeping, thats just someone insulting you. people insulting you doesn’t actually do anything aside from maybe hurt your feelings if you choose to take it personally

Eeeh not really. Excluding someone from the community aspect of subcultures is still a form of gatekeeping.
But even if it wasn't for the sake of the argument, most ppl complaining about "gatekeeping" nowdays are just kids who have not found their place in the subculture yet. And being kids of course they lack a spine, but at the end of the day who cares, they'll get around it eventually. It's not like in the "good old days" or whatever we didn't complain about gatekeepers or being ostracized, bc we definitely did LOL

i really dont think people being mean to you is gatekeeping. if someone in your workplace is mean to you does that mean theyre gatekeeping you from their work friend group? of course people complained about this same thing in the past. i think it was equally stupid back then too
children are allowed to be spineless idrc about that, but as a full grown adult being able to brush off meaningless insults is a vital skill
