gee tee - prehistoric chrome (2024)

genre: garage punk, synth punk, egg punk

FFO: amyl and the sniffers, snooper, dry cleaning
rating: 7.75/10

I really like this band, been following them through their “meteoric” rise to garage punk fame since like 2018. in a relatively undiscovered genre of music, they have amassed millions of plays and a cult following. they have come out with a few more EPs during that span such as Atomic and Chromo-Zone of which I prefer the latter, purely for its break from the formulaic strategy this band seems to take. I know that punk music on paper is very simple, and while gee tee incorporate fun new wave inspired synths and peppy beats, they fall short in variety. off the top of my head I remember a few melodies, but they all tend to blend together. that is to say it’s not a boring sound, but predictable. something like if the urinals or the cramps found a yamaha cp-70 electric keyboard at an estate sale and decided, “what the hell?” all in all this album feels like a subway sandwich: hits when you’re really craving it but somehow everything is just a mash-up of the same 10 ingredients. songs I would recommend: 40k - Demo, drag race mag, find the beat

nadia oh - hot like wow (2008)
genre: dance pop, electropop

FFO: kesha, lady gaga
rating: 8.5/10

this is the  funnest late-2000’s club music. at some point near the end of last year at least 5 of the songs from this album were my favorites of the moment, after out of curiosity I looked up the album that “got your number” came from. this has that late-2000s piecey electro production that is kind of offbeat but majorly danceable. songs I would recommend: hot male, bounce, rip it up

gidropony - punkarockafeller (2009)

genre: nintendocore, chiptune

FFO: kap bambino, YOU LOVE HER

rating: 9/10

this band hails from Russia and  the myspace era of chiptune/electropunk music. this album will have you jumping around your bedroom like you did a line when you really just had a shot of matcha, wishing you had IRL friends (Me). I have yet to explore their other albums and singles but this specific brand of nintendocore is endless fun. like going to the arcade slightly drunk with your teenage friends, causing a ruckus. UPDATE: I have since listened to the rest of their music and really like a few other releases like sin trinity and milk lupo. haven’t looked deeply further than that. songs I would recommend from this release: hell yeah, acidhead, happy idiots

90 day men - (it (is) it) critical band (2000)

genre: post-hardcore, noise rock, emo

FFO: unwound, texas is the reason
rating: 8/10

this is one of my favorite post-hardcore groups probably second to my all-time fav, unwound, and that says a lot because I really liked post-hardcore for a while in my timeline of hyperfixations. I guess I didn’t really dig super deep into the genre like some ZOOMOFs I know, but i listened HARD and LONG. while you were discovering charli xcx for the first time I was in the trenches…
here you’ve got the vocalist moaning and groaning over dissonant instrumentals. lots of cymbals within the drums being played, almost jazzy. experiments with noisy, discordant guitars and bass that slides all over the spectrum. I don’t really know how to specify it but I love when instruments feel like they’re being strummed freely on open strings. songs I would recommend: from one primadonna to another, exploration vs. solution baby, jupiter and ito

bonus review!!!1 >.<

xeno & oaklander - par avion (2014)
genre: synth pop, minimal synth

FFO: trisomie 21, deux, chris & cosey, ministry
rating: 9/10

this band is from brooklyn but could be mistaken for any big synth wave/pop/minimal band if they time-traveled from 1984 germany, italy, or france. for comparison’s sake it almost hits the nail on the head, though I feel they are more eager in percussion in a modern sense. (IDFK how to talk about music it’s just vibes man). featuring dueted vocals there is a nice push and pull there that I feel might have been missed in their transplant era. also sort of toes the line between minimal and coldwave but not heavy on the bass like coldwave which I appreciate. I think this band fits into the tapestry of modern synth music well. I really dislike coldwave sowwy :3 I will definitely be checking out more from these guys they are hip hop happening. songs I would recommend: nuage d’lvoire, sheen, jasmine nights, g. bruno

aaaand thank you for reading... hearts && luv
