I fear that most people misuse the word “gifted child” to victimizise themselves, in their own eyes or in other eyes.
You are not a gifted child for performing well in elementary school and/or in middle school. Thats the average, study material is made to be easy for kids, only a few with bad family background will fall behind usually or with a learning disability. Gifted children perform well all through schools till the end of university or skip classes in high school or university for performing too well then later on in their adult life they get a bad job by their own fault or not get a job at all and waste away their life when they have so much talent. You guys are not adults who finished university, you are minors at max in high school who doesnt have the mental energy to perform well or you are just not smart enough for it all.
This term was watered down to fit most people just like with almost every term like autistic or bpd when these terms are supposed to be serious and deep and not fit every person.

I overall agree with your blog, but some definitions needs to explicitly be elaborated, while, obviously, being a "gifted child" isn't just doing well in elementary and/or middle school (materials are made to be easy, as you have mentioned), but doing well throughout your entire academic career.
Well, I wanted to add, that it isn't only that factor that should be taken in consideration when we assign the definition "gifted child" is that IQ plays an enormous factor, while this gifted differentiates in "a wide variety of talents, including verbal, mathematical, spatial-visual, musical, and interpersonal abilities" , which are normally measured by the attending school (source: Britannica)
(Disclaimer: I only read the introduction of the article and not the elaborate history and developments)
I genuinely appreciate that there is more light shown on the misuse of these definitions and the harm it (could) cause(s). It's most likely that social media is enabling it, because as we had seen the trend of "being depressed is edgy and cool" in the years 2020/21, it became obvious that mostly teens grab the words and say "Hey, this is so me" while not doing any research on it or just wanting to have a term assigned to them (I don't quite remember the psychological term for it D: )
This will mostly likely stay a long, on-going trend until people learn to use their critical thinking skills and realise that being disadvantaged isn't a nice experience :-)
Welp, sorry if it has gotten a bit long, wish you good night/day/noon (≧▽≦)

And please excuse my grammar, I am quite in a hurry (๑•﹏•)
