I discovered GING NANG BOYZ through one of the soundtrack they made for Sonny Boy, "Boy Meets Girl"(少年少女). The voice of the main vocalist really captivates me so I dive into their other work. For this album I started checking out "BABY BABY", but felt like it's only fair to start listening to all the songs in order, and oh boy..., this album took me through a nostalgic, intense, emotional rollercoaster. The raw, raspy and bold vocal of Kazunobu Mineta really scratch my heart in ways that makes me want to kill myself brutally while also simultaneously feel inspired to live my life boldly to the fullest.
The band really captures the spirit of teenage punk and how they choose words and ways to express love through these 14 tracks. Some lyrics are bold and provocative, and sure it did make me pause on the first time hearing "Your justice is with a condom on, piercing that cute girl's p**sy", but it also did make me laugh. I really do appreciate the rawness in how these lyrics are written, it is sincere and authentic. It doesn't shy away from telling the story about some of the more intense and crazy side of being in love, which to me is what makes the art feels more personal and honest to the audience.
What made my listening experience even more profound was the fact that I was going through this album while catching a cigarette break down the smoking area at my office building feeling so tired from lack of sleep and the work load I have this week. The screams and shouts from Mineta really slapped me in the face and pierced my tired salary(wo)man's heart, it is LOUD and that's GOOD, that's the POINT: to capture the feeling of being young and alive, the feeling of being free. There is no holding back with any songs, no formality or compromises, which to me feels like a warm hug from the time of youth where you can live a little more freely without the constraints of adult responsibilities. It is quite crazy to me that a noise rock album would make me shed tears, but that's how you know it's a real deal.
I really do think it is a must to listen to all the songs in order because the way this album progresses from start to finish is really well thought out, it concludes the feeling of growing up perfectly. It started off crazy and it peaked to an even a more crazier level before the rollercoaster drop down to the last 3 songs( 若者たち, 青春時代 and 東京) with the run time of each song being a little longer than the last and the tune gets slower and more mellow.
The ride finally stops at Tokyo, a song that talks about how dreams and times you shared with someone from your past are fading away into memories. Which that, to me, is the perfect way to conclude the journey of our years of youth. The phase of being young alive in love will always be a part of us, inspiring us to grow and live forward gracefully and you can always look back and enjoy the song from the past every once in a while.
"僕が歌うことは全部君が僕に教えてくれたものさ
ふたりを通り過ぎたなんでもない毎日が 僕にとってはそれこそが歌になるのさ"
