Types of gyaru 2 / By skin tone ( •̯́ ₃ •̯̀)

✧˖°꒰By skin tone꒱°˖✧

It sounds very discriminatory today, but it was once common to refer to gyaru by their skin tone, as there were few clothing styles, and skin tone determined how exaggerated the style was.

Ganjiro or Shirogyaru

The term "Ganjiro" means "white face" or "washed face" and referred to girls who, at that time, couldn't or didn't want to go to tanning salons to get a tan, so they kept their natural skin tone. Their style was the simplest, and they didn't dress too exaggeratedly.

Currently, the term "Shirogyaru" is used, where "Shiro" (白) means "white" in Japanese and "gyaru" (ギャル). It's worth noting that they were actually called that way in the past, but the term "Ganjiro" was more common.

The current name is still similar to the old one, as it refers to girls who usually wear makeup and simpler clothing.

Ganguro or Kuro Gyaru

Ganguro comes from "gan" (顔), meaning "face," and "kuro" (黒), meaning "black." This style was used to describe girls who frequented tanning salons without going to extremes in skin tone.

This style is characterized by a deep tan, blonde or bleached hair, white eyeshadow and lip makeup, and striking, sensual, and bold clothing, unusual for the time.

The style was pioneered by model "Buriteri" on an iconic EGG magazine cover. It was so popular that it was initially called "Buriteri Style" and later adopted the name "Ganguro."

"Kuro Gyaru": The word "kuro" (黒) means "black" in Japanese. While a few years ago the term was used to describe a gyaru fashion style characterized by a darker, bolder appearance compared to other gyaru styles, it is now used to describe the opposite of "Shirogyaru." That is, girls who aim for a more tanned skin tone and wear much more striking clothing, hairstyles, and makeup.

Yamanba or Manba

There's no equivalent today, so we could say that "Kuro Gyaru" is the closest thing to the ultimate gyaru exaggeration.

This name refers to girls who wore white eye makeup, further darkened their faces with foundation, adorned themselves with stickers, and also wore white lipstick. Their hair was also brightly colored, and they wore many accessories, usually flowers.

The clothes were extremely striking, almost always with hibiscus or floral prints in general, or with prints of recognized Sanrio or Disney characters, for the most part.
