There are (in the past) three ways to refer to a gyaru, by age, skin tone and clothing style.

Previously, the classification was very simple and based primarily on age, as at that time, clothing and makeup styles were quite similar across age groups.
Ko-gyaru (Gyaru girl): Originally, this term referred to girls still in school who adopted the gyaru style. Over time, as kogyaru girls became known for their unique school uniform style, the term was applied to any gyaru who dressed in that manner.
Suto-gyaru (Gyaru forever): This term referred to adult women or school graduates who continued the gyaru style.
Over time, the term "suto-gyaru" fell into disuse.
