It's important to clarify that Gyaru, Gal and Gyal are synonyms.

Gyaru comes from the Japanese pronunciation of the word "Gal" ("girl" in informal English), which eventually evolved into "Gyaru." Interestingly, Japanese people often mention that it was the foreign community that adopted the term "Gyaru" instead of "Gal."

Although Gyaru is the most commonly used term, "Gal" and "Gyal" are also valid, although less common due to their use by foreigners to refer to "girls" in general.

It's essential to have a basic understanding of Gyaru culture before exploring the subdivisions, as otherwise, it can be confusing. I recommend reading this blog or researching other websites to better understand it.

In short, the Gyaru emerged in the 1980s as bold girls who challenged established Japanese beauty standards. They drew inspiration from Western fashion and adopted practices such as dyeing their hair and wearing bright makeup, which contrasted with traditional beauty standards.

Over time, brands like Me Jane began to take an interest in this emerging subculture, offering clothing and accessories in keeping with the gyaru style. Fashion magazines like Gal and Egg also helped popularize the movement, and other publications emerged, such as Ranzuki, Ageha, and Popteen.

Gyaru has evolved from a simple urban tribe to a well-established subculture with its own aesthetic and lifestyle. Although it experienced a period of decline, the recent resurgence, driven in part by social media and the pandemic, has revitalized the Gyaru scene, attracting both new and veteran followers who are reinvigorating the movement.
