"Prom Night"

June, 1958

This photo was taken sometime in June of 1958, in someones home. There doesn't appear to be any writing on the back, and the corrugated border shows that this was meant to be, or was, in a scrap book or photo album. The man, and woman, look fairly young, so one can assume they are probably in their final year of high school. Thus, as well as the fact that the man wears a stunning white rose boutonnière, I can only assume they could be going to prom. Prom's began in the late 1800s as collegiate tea dance events, the world "prom" coming from the world "Promenade", proms would not be a high school event until the 1920s, and even then, they were mostly still smaller gatherings. The woman's outfit is a stunning chiffon and ribbon layered gown, with a simple string of pearls, ear rings which also appear pearl, and white high heels (Worn commonly before labor day and especially at special events like parties or baptismals.). The man wears a sport coat, with a thin tie, a rose boutonnière, light trousers, and black shoes. The mans glasses look very similar to ones that I use, which were popular at the time, but I'm sure his were made to last, rather than mine haha! The TV in the background is stunning, I believe its either an RCA or Magnavox. The decor around the house is also really unique, a mix of Victorian, modern, and tropical.

I love the stuff in my collection that tells such a vast story from just a single frame of someones life, and its always fun taking educated guesses at what is going on, and of course, doing research!
