i dont understand trends

i waz out the other night and i saw this group of girls walk by. they were all wearing basically the same thing. leggings, uggs slip ons, and an oversized sweatshirt from the same brand as everyone else was wearing. these are the new trends and i get it, trends are trends, but are these girls wearing these clothes because they actually like the style or is it just to fit in? i dont get the fun in that. i dont understand how its fun to wake up in the morning and put on what everyone else is wearing to protect yourself from judgement. im a completely different person from these popular girls, but i find it so fun to put together my own unique outfit and express myself. i would hate to wake up every morning and pick out something like that, again because its not my style and im well aware of that, but the majority of people who deck themselves in the latest trends are only doing it to protect themselves from being made fun of by their peers. i would hate to force myself to wear something out of fear of judgement.

Some people really never think about why they behave the way they do, fashion choices included. It's not like I never see something cool is trending and adopt it into my style but I usually still have it after it goes out of fashion. I also can't imagine replacing your wardrobe every new trend cycle, it must be such a wasteful way to live

It's definitely wasteful. So wasteful that you can even see a dumped clothing pile in the Atacama desert from space (I really wish I were kidding when I say this).

But unfortunately, this is exactly what happens when you brainwash the masses by telling them that they "need" to wear this and to look like that every few months or so (and particularly so in this current day and age of social media bombardment). Not only that, but clothing is also being manufactured to be cheaper in quality as well and isn't built to last as long as garments from the past (I have plenty of hand me down and thrifted clothing from the 90s - maybe around the late 2000s/early 2010s or so that are still holding up well to this day and were built well compared to a lot of the thin, flimsy fabric shit I see in stores currently).

I get replacing your wardrobe if you've gained or lost a significant enough amount of weight and can't fit into your current clothing anymore, but other than that, people should really try to wear their clothing until they become damaged beyond the point of repair instead of just following the latest new trends or whatever and throwing anything and everything that isn't currently considered "trendy" by the fashion gods at the moment (and as a little side note, I could also make a full rant about other related issues such as vanity sizing or how it seems that basic sewing is a dying skill, but I'm going to end this here and keep everything on topic).

And also, I don't care if things like low rise skinny jeans, tight fitting baby tee styled t-shirts, or even side parted hair for that matter are considered "trendy" or not at any given moment, because I'm still wearing them on a regular basis anyways regardless of if anyone else is doing the same or not. That's what being a nonconformist is truly all about.<3

woah, YOU GET IT!! i actually love this. you made so many good points that i've been trying to say for so long. i always donate to the military and stuff, like i just donated a bunch of old shoes. i have all these old skirts that i dont wear too, i have them in a bag now that i'm planning to donate to a local thrift store of mine bc i want someone to find them and upcycle or turn it into something cool :) i never knew that about the atacama desert. how can people not see how big of a problem this is? climate change and pollution are topics that i am very adamant about, so that yes, the constant bullying surrounding people who dont follow trends or wear the latest clothing brands bothers me to death, but whats even worse is fast fashion and how wasteful and harmful it all is, ESPECIALLY how much people choose to ignore it even though there is scientific evidence showing that climate change, pollution, garbage, fast fashion, is actively harming our planet. aaaaaaah, like i said you brought up many good points. its good to talk to someone who actually has some sense in them :)

i think that being 'basic' is not something depend on lack of interests. They just like this stuffs and this stuffs are connecting them. It's true that overconsumption is EVERYWHERE and trends are just for ppl buy more and more, but not all of them are like that. I mean alt people still are buying from shein, so thats the same. I think that this people just dont focus on some kind of things. Uggs are trendy for couple of years. Someone may just like aesthetic of 'being clean' and not to have stuffs in darker colours. Popularity of trends depends on corporations and advertising. Then when someone have something you want to try it too to ability of talking about this stuffs or just they like them, nothing more

'dont focus on sone kind of thing' - i mean that they like dont try harder only but feel comfy. And they feel comfy with being like other person. Yk, much 'basics' (im not try to offend by this term) have intrests like skincare, makeup, hair, doing nails and much much more. And when someone do something revolutionary for them in someone and they like it - they want to do that too bc they just like it

It's definitely just to fit in with the rest the crowd. If it were truly about self expression, you'd be seeing more people continuing to dress in their own personal style regardless of whether what they like and their styles are considered "in" or not, as opposed to chasing the ever changing trends (almost as if they were chasing the dragon in that Heroin Hero game from South Park, where you never end up catching the dragon).

Neurotypical adolescents in particular are especially prone to being conformist sheep who hardly, if ever, think for themselves, unfortunately.

Me on the other hand, I don't care to follow today's stupid trends and am satisfied with just doing my own thing regardless of whether anyone else is doing/wearing something or not. It's almost as if I had been vaccinated against conformity from before I was even born, it seems. Besides, the world needs people like you and I as the voices of reason and acting as forces against the increasing homogenization of our world in this day and age. :)

I think that in most cases such people do not have any special interests. They simply have nothing to express.
For me they're like some NPCs
