ECCOJAMS OF RAP
4.5/5 STARS RYM (check my acc here)
I'm still a
little lost after hearing this album over and over, but I love it. What I
pick up on immediately is the different sounds this album comes with. I
don't just mean the slowing and pitching affects, but right down to the
samples. Some of these samples (30 Dollah, CuntHoe$,
IceCre4m&$wishas) aren't sampled in conventional ways, or even have
conventional production on top of it. The rapping along with the affects
pair nicely with some of the weird wobbly beats and really complete the
song. In reality though none of these songs are conventional. Sure some
of them are catchy and you can pick a few to put in your playlist, but a
good chunk of this music belongs in the album. This album does
something great which is create an environment for the music, and make
it hard to separate a song from the whole piece. To put it simply, this
album has its highs and lows, but in the context of the album all these
tracks together make sense.
The environment it makes is this drugged
out and almost dream like environment, much like hypnogogic pop.
Noticeable things that make the album this way are the slowing and
pitching down of moments in songs which usually follows the cloud rap
genre. Another thing that give that feeling are some of the samples and
production techniques. A lot of the vocals, tracks, spoken samples, will
have their quirks and imperfections which add to this album. It feels
more DIY hearing these sounds clash together which adds onto the
dreamy/druggy feeling. You want things to be right and not repetitive,
you will have high bursts of energy, you'll slow down and relax, or
you'll be confused on songs production or line delivery. A lot of these
things can just be playing with affects, but I argue that most of these
changes support the world the album creates. A lot of these feelings
I've described are similar to how I feel about eccojams which I should
go more into.
Things don't belong together, but that's what makes the
album really good. This album is like a really weird or a really cool
trip; you either experience and enjoy it or experience and come out
confused.
