Thoughts on Swansea (mouthwashing)

I've been thinking a lot more recently about Swansea, his character and the way we perceive him 

I'll preface this by saying I genuinely like Swansea a lot. His bond with Daisuke was sweet and I respected him for putting Daisuke to rest and trying to kill Jimmy. But I feel like there's so much left unsaid about him, his relationship with his family especially

He doesn't get into it much, but he seems to express disappointment towards his kids and I almost wonder if Daisuke could've been a kind of replacement for him. A balm. He seems so detached from his family and the way he spoke about how getting settled down made him feel empty makes me think that such family ideals were forced upon him. We know nothing of his wife and he could very well have been in an unhappy marriage. 

I wonder why he decided to work for Pony Express. He seems to have always been aware of how shady the company was and the fact that it wouldn't last long, but he still remained loyal to it. He seems to be a competent mechanic so he very well could've applied to other positions. But he decided to cling to one of the last manned freighter companies around, a position where he would be cut off from most human contact for months on end.

Maybe the job was an out for him, maybe it served as an escape, or maybe he was genuinely passionate about it. But those days seem to be long gone.

And that clearly didn't work out for him, because the days he spent entirely drinking himself into a stupor, the ones he likely remember the least, were the best days of his life.
