this week’s the last before third quarter ends, so we’re having a spirit week. i guess the theme is cancer. today was liver cancer. i guess they picked that cause it was green. micah went all out for st. patrick’s day. he was wearing a green shirt, green flannel suit jacket, he was using the irish flag as a cape, he had a leperchaun hat on, a green beard painted on his face, and he spoke all day in an irish accent. he’ll take any excuse he can get to go all out. hell, one time he just showed up to school in a hotdog costume, no reason at all. we don’t usually do much in my house. some years mom make corned beef and cabbage or shepherds pie, but we didn’t do anything this year. everybody’s been tired and sick lately. the holiday’s still a pretty big deal for my family though. both my grandmothers are mostly irish. on my dads side this was demonstrated by their excessive use of potatoes, as in they ate them with every meal and had a whole portion of the basement where they would store hundreds upon hundreds of discount potatoes. my other grandma isn’t so into potatoes, but i think her whole family has just been trying to keep it going, you know? her parents, their parents, and so on and so forth. her family immigrated here in the late 1800s, you know. i’m not exactly sure how to say it, but you probably get it. her and grandpa actually met on st. patrick’s day too, so it’s especially special. they were both at this pub in downtown minneapolis or something, and grandma was wearing a pin that said “kiss me i’m irish”. so when grandpa came out the bathroom and saw her, he just went up an kissed her, and now just last august they had their 50th wedding anniversary. but yeah, tomorrow is childhood cancer day so i gotta wear yellow. not sure if i got any yellow shirts, so i’ll probably just find my bee socks. happy st. patrick’s day.
