a discussion of 2020s styles!
hello! i hope monday is treating you relatively well. because it really is monday. use this post for a wind down <3
for this post, I wanted to talk about today’s fashion. Like, the 2020s. We are seriously halfway through the 2020s… that is actually so crazy to me I remember 2016 like it was yesterday. anyway, many unique fashion styles have came up in the last five years (ESPECIALLY because of quarantine tiktok fashion). i feel like the 2020s consists of so many styles that it makes it extra diverse, especially with the emergence of social media. some styles are cute, some arent… today, i am going to discuss styles i do and don't like. now, i just wanted to say that this is MY OPINION!!! if ur mad make ur own post. lets get started!
★ y2k re-emergence
★★★★★
i LOOOOVVVEEEE the 2000s look! I’m very happy that it has came back into style because its just eye-catching and girly. the bright colors and different textures allow people to stand out from regular people wearing cuffed cargo pants. its such a fun style that anyone can pull off WHEN DONE CORRECTLY!!! i dislike when someone calls their outfit y2k and its just flared jeans and a top with a star on it or something. like… there is no aspect of the 2000s!! i feel like this style is such an important part to 2020s fashion and the people that were growing up during this time. everyone was quarantined at home alone, but we were all connected through tiktok. trends fell in and out constantly during quarantine, but the y2k style has stuck the most. the popularization of y2k fashion t allowed us to be the people that we never got the chance to be, wear the things that we would yearn to wear but wouldn’t because it was “unusual.” we can wear our confidence like we have always wanted! a classic style with such cute combinations, y2k will always be in.
★ the "opium" aesthetic
★★★☆☆
this title is so cringe. i’m not too opposed to the fashion, i really like the silhouettes and the fact that the primary color being worn is black. however, i never say this out loud because the people this fashion is associated with is so CORNY! anyway, the style, while not as recognized as a real fashion aesthetic, is very unique. i like the styles it blends to create the trademark look. its like a cybergoth rockstar. IDK. i adore the details of the aesthetic,: the gothic jewelry of chrome hearts to smudged dark eye makeup kind of make the whole outfit just make sense. however, theres something that always stays in my mind when i see this aesthetic. theres a certain way you have to present yourself when wearing this aesthetic. you have to act like, soooo mysterious, but you also have to act like you are your own person. theres just a fine line before you get called a poser or someone whos obsessed with the opium music label. overall, i like this style. its a modern, high fashion take on having a dark, gothic silhouette. this fashion style is not very common to see, but the people who wear this probably think they are above everyone else.
★ old money
★★★★☆
every single “old money” aesthetic video i see just reminds me of a vacation in greece. even though this is someones lifestyle, it’s included in a lot of aesthetics videos. i really like this sort of style. i'm jealous of everyone who lives like this for real. the old money aesthetic is extremely classy and clean. you look like you go to the country club every single day. the style is simple yet tells a lot; it explains why this lifestyles would be seen as “aesthetic.” something that is different from other styles is that old money is not flashy. despite wearing pricey brands, they don’t flaunt this face. expensive brands can get get tacky when not presented in the right way. old money stays subtle and keeps things minimal with colors, branding, and jewelry. it remains elegant, looking expensive while not necessarily shoving it in everyone's face. everything fits like it's supposed to, and the lining of the clothes is just perfect. while new money thrives off of trends, old money maintains the same, clean look. i like how minimal things are because it only emphasizes how wealthy these people are. like they don't feel the need to show off. this is the type of life i would live… just elegant and with little worries.
★ techwear
★☆☆☆☆
erm... what is this? i don’t really like this one at ALL. it’s giving like. “i WANT to be a spy but im not quite there yet.” i wouldn’t feel confident if i wore this outside. it looks extremely unpractical to wear on like a Wednesday afternoon. i know its made up of high quality outerwear but it looks sooo trippable. it just feels so out of place, like this is real life not bladerunner 2049. the weird proportions and layering make it unflattering to look at. some techwear outfits look extremely heavy, and that is not as comfortable as wearing an outfit should be! i just cant find one good thing about these types of outfits. I know its supposed to be like futuristic or whatever but i just can't see what's nice about this.
i know i didn't cover every fashion trend that has emerged the past 5 years. sue me! i can't cover all of them in one post. but i hope that this post introduced you to something new, your opinion resonated with me, or just something. i hope you liked today's post, see you soon!
if you are reading this, you are looking at my school project!
