I watched the Life of Pi today for the first time probably since it came out. As someone who struggles a lot with my spiritual identity I think this was a perfect time to watch this.
There was one particular line thatt stuck out to me a lot.
"Without Richard Parker, I would have died by now. My fear of him keeps me alert. Tending to his needs gives my life purpose."
Pi doesnt necessarily need to keep Richard Parker alive, he does because without something to keep him going what reason does he have to stay alive? This is exactly what religion was created for in the first place. Humanity likes to have a purpose. Their fear in some higher power and tending to the needs of their faith is something most of humanity use to drive them to continue on with their life. If he didn't have "Richard Parker" with him on that ship.... would he have laid down until he died? Gave up when there seemed to be no hope? Humans need something to look to when theres nothing left.
