Purple hearts (poem)

The velvet blanket of privilege covers you whole

You walk around this town like a ghost, dreaming of purple hearts in banquet halls.

You're a princess from another time, wandering around the cul de sac.

We close our ears and avert our eyes, you're a dusting relic out of place in this new found suburbia.

Yet still I wonder why you cry so loudly once all of the neighborhood lights have turned off and the world falls into silence.
