10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) is a masterpiece. Suspenseful all the way through, and the entire cast of characters are all unreliable narrators, making what’s really going on a mystery until the very end. The atmosphere was immaculate, being set in a doomsday bunker with a conspiracy theorist, a man with a strange past, and a kidnapped woman. This movie is just under an hour and forty five minutes, and has a PG-13 rating! Honestly a great gateway into more intense slow burn horror. 10 Cloverfield Lane is currently available to watch or rent on Amazon Prime, MGM+, and YouTube TV.

🩸🩸🩸SPOILER WARNING🩸🩸🩸

The horror in this movie is almost completely implied. Sure, there’s aliens, but the mystery of what happened to the missing girl, Brittany, is so much more disturbing. The scene with the ‘help’ message scratched into the window is so horrifying, much more than the frankly goofy looking monsters at the end. Personally, I find the fact that Howard wasn’t lying about the aliens so much scarier than if he was making them up. He was clearly trying to make Michelle into his daughter, Megan, like he had done to Brittany. I choose to believe that this is why he ran Michelle’s car off the road, not the accident he claims. He wanted her to be trapped with him in his bunker, using the treat of the attack as a way to make sure his new ‘Megan’ wouldn’t leave him like the others before her.
