I would like to thank you for showing me my wings,

but you were also the person who told me I was locked in this cage with you.

You may have taught me to hover and chirp,

but I had to teach myself to fly and sing.

You locked us in this cage, yes,

but you assumed I wouldn't simply teach myself to make a key.

I may have escaped, but you did not follow.

You stayed behind to chirp

With no audience to hear you.
