The Weather

Let's make the best kind of small-talk,

The kind where we discuss the weather.

You always bring up the rain,

(It's fraught with reminders of us)

And I love it too.

I love the sound of thunder in the distance,

Rain on the window panes,

The warmth of a good blanket and better company.

But I want to talk about all that's before and after:

The smell before a storm,

The wind that blows here, singing songs,

Through the trees and around buildings.

And, oh, the grass!

All dewy, sparkling in the light,

Flowing like water in those winds,

The ones that sound like waves crashing against the shore,

It's soft and green underfoot.

The storm is wonderful, of course,

But the rest of the day is beautiful too.
