the differences between scene and emo

scene and emo are commonly mixed up in today's society, despite being entirely different—though overlapping—fashions when they were created. i am here to help share the differences! =]

SCENE

unlike emo, scene is composed of brighter colors, the occasional miniskirt, many accessories, and many layers. coloring and styling the hair is also very popular in scene fashion, as well as wearing colorful eyeshadow with heavy black eyeliner and lip gloss, as well as various assortments of nail polish. popular ways to accessorize with scene fashions include colorful or silver jewelry, hair extensions, studded belts and bracelets, arm warmers, plastic decorative glasses, and kandi, which is jewelry made with plastic, round beads known as pony beads and the occasional charm which is either bought as-is or made out of ironed plastic beads known as perler beads.

examples of scene fashion:

a person dressed in scene fashion. they have large blue hair with a pink streak near their head, a white t-shirt with black dots layered over a pink long-sleeved one, many piercings, black and white checkered leggings, and many accessories, including a black heart necklace, jelly bracelets, a single rainbow arm warmer, and two belts, one black studded with pink and one rainbow. they are sitting cross-legged on the ground, and the camera is angled to look down at them.

another person dressed in scene fashion, they have large pink hair with a small tiara in it, a purple to orange to purple grandiant tank top with leapord print, a black, silver studded belt, a pink miniskirt, and black and purple knee-high socks. they also wear a spiked choker necklace, several silver necklaces, and many kandi bradelets on their wrist. they have tattoos on their arms and legs and are looking down.

EMO

emo fashion is a lot more simplistic than scene fashion. consisting of mostly black, people who dress emo typically wear black t-shirts with the occasional one layered underneath, skinny jeans, and shoes like converse. it is also common to color the hair black, and keep it short with long bangs that cover the eyes somewhat. accessorizing is not very common with emo fashions, but they do wear dark make-up around the eyes and paint their nails black.

examples of emo fashion:
someone wearing emo fashion. they have black ripped skinny jeans, short black hair that covers their eyes, and a black t-shirt with white text that says "normal" with two question marks on either side, the first one being upside-down.
another person wearing emo fashion. they have a black hooded zip-up jacket with one sleeve rolled up and the hood partially covering their head, a gray beanie, dark makeup around the eyes, and black skinny jeans. they also have black nail polish
