rym has a pretty good recommendation algorithm and i haven't checked up on mine in a while, so that's exactly what i did
i also think i'm gonna start trying to sneak in at least 1 new 2025 release a week because if i don't i know i'm gonna fall behind like last year. which, frankly, was catastrophic.
you also get a couple of eps this week. as a treat
as a refresher - italicized tracks are interludes, bolded tracks are my standouts (a.k.a. a 4.5 or higher), a ★ indicates my favorite song, and an × indicates my least favorite song
(p.s. clicking on an album cover it'll take you to some more info about the album on rateyourmusic)
i present my rating system, THE SANDWICH SCALE
★★★★★ - toasted meatball sub / all-timer
★★★★½ - taylor ham egg and cheese / love
★★★★ - loaded with toppings / great
★★★½ - a nice flatbread / might order again if i'm in the mood
★★★ - a little soggy / average + good moments
★★½ - a little dry / average + boring
★★ - untoasted subway flatbread / pretty bad, mediocre at best
★½ - where are my toppings / quite bad
★ - finding an onion when i ordered no onion / all-time stinker

Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) - Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band | 1978★★★½
i'm not entirely sure why i put off listening to captain beefheart for so long. maybe because i felt hellbent on starting with Trout Mask Replica, which is 1. an hour and a half and 2. not on spotify, or maybe because of just the sheer amount of beefheart there is has made it seem like a daunting task. while i still would like to get to Trout Mask Replica eventually, this'll do for now. i'm a big fan of the vocals, the blues rock crooning is a delight and the more oxbow-esq gravelly moments tickle me nicely. the magic band more than pulls their weight, there is not a single dull moment in any of these songs.

★★★
some really beautiful moments (all of which are in the latter half), but mostly doesn't do it for me. No One Noticed is a classic art rock cut that does just enough without doing too much. the second half takes a more ambient focus and is where this album really shines. he's has always been great at creating space and there's plenty here, it gives you room to breathe and allows for him to create these incredibly lush soundscapes. brian eno is a wizard don't get me wrong, and while this is pretty reminiscent of some early talking heads, it doesn't quite reach the heights he would with other artists. i see why people fw him so much but respectfully i will never be listening to this again

i don't know what's going on but girl yesss
one of my favorite types of album is "unknown band rises to the top of rym charts in like 2 days". this is a phenomenal example of that type of album, and it's one that fully deserved its climb. for a noise rock album there's actually a decent amount of dance influence at points which i found really fun. looking back through the tracklist i was surprised to see only one song over 4 minutes, they do a really great job at building tension and release in relatively short bursts.
if you've ever once liked a post-hardcore album you need to listen to this

Let It Be - The Replacements | 1984
★★★½
i'm not as big of a fan of early alternative rock as i'd like to be and i can't really place my finger on why. but the replacements offer a pleasing experience filled to the brim with teenage angst with a few hints of hardcore punk on songs like Tommy Gets His Tonsils Out and in the vocals at other points. it's not quite punk but not exactly classic rock and roll. for its time, Let It Be was a much more unique experience than it is now. it's brash and bold but beautifully soft at points, it's a delicate balance of punk and more acoustic based songs and they pull it off well. so what do i conclude from this? yeah it's pretty alright. unfortunately we now live in a time where teenage angst is cliche, and that sentiment has rooted itself deep into my mind. but i mean knowing what it is and also taking into account the time period, i feel forced to give it a couple pity points

if you saw my bulletin yesterday you already know what this is gonna be. cameron winter is one of my favorite singers of this century so far and if you've never listened to geese i will always recommend their album 3D Country to everybody i ever meet, the first time i listened to them his voice stood out in a way that that nobody had since my first time hearing geordie greep with black midi. he takes a much softer and more shy persona on Heavy Metal compared to the usual confidence he exudes with geese, with wavering vocals and a more whispery delivery. the album as a whole is much more stripped back with more bare bones instrumentation. he maintains the same strong voice in his writing but it takes on a much different meaning here - it's much more intimate than any work geese has done so far, and there's almost a gospel-esq feeling at points. normally my final rating is about the same as my tracklist average but i feel like i had to boost this up to a 4.5★ (track average was 4) because as a whole experience i haven't had one this good in a hot minute. cameron winter let me gobble it please just one chance

救済の技法 [Kyuusai no gihou] - 平沢進 [Susumu Hirasawa] | 1998
art pop | progressive pop | electronic
★★★½
a very beautiful experience by a man who clearly knows his shit, it's very rare you find an album with only 344 negative (2.5>) ratings out of over 6,000 (and on the opposite side, 1266 5s). i really don't have any complaints but... idk i feel like i shoulda loved this more? it's light and airy while simultaneously grand and cinematic and it's incredibly pleasant, 救済の技法 in particular does an excellent but i didn't get much else out of it. i've learned after listening that this is a concept album, so perhaps not knowing japanese is dampening my perception a bit? i also went in ready to have my life changed forever which was definitely not the play. idk. still absolutely worth checking out if you're big into japanese pop, i truly have nothing negative to say

An Anthology of Dead Ends EP - Botch | 2002
mathcore
★★★½
gonna be real i only listened to this cuz the song names made me laugh. this is a great mathcore/metalcore ep, if you liked chat pile or knocked loose's last albums you'll probably dig this. most of this ep is very compact and tense metalcore, with a break in the form of Afghamistam, a 7 minute long breath of fresh air that i wish there was more of before you're hit with Micaragua. it's a sharp and explosive ending that hits you like shrapnel, providing an excellent contrast to Afghamistam while picking the previous momentum back up

4D Country - Geese | 2023
indie rock
★★★½
as much as i love geese, i have somehow managed to avoid this follow up to 3D Country leftovers for almost 2 years and after listening to cameron's solo album i figured this is the time. this ep's title track is an extended 7 minute version of 3D Country, and maybe it's just because i'm used to the standard version but it overstays its welcome, but i can't hate it cause 3D Country is one of my favorite geese songs and at the end of the day it's still more 3D Country. Jesse takes almost kind of a blues-y turn as cameron takes a more whispery approach at times, not entirely dissimilar to Heavy Metal but still keeping the edge. Killing My Borrowed Time and Space Race also both take a softer approach both instrumentally and vocally. overall a group of solid cuts but i can see why they didn't make the album
