let me know if you loved them or hated them or if you found something new or old worth listening to!
bassvictim - basspunk 2 (2025)
genre: electroclash, experimental hip hop
FFO: snow strippers, the hellp
rating: 9/10
the first song I heard from this london based british/polish duo was air on a g string, and the production and foreign sounding vocals had me instantly hooked. I really don’t know how to quantify electronic music like this, just know that it is expertly original and bumping. songs I would recommend: hum it to google, makes you wonder, with you, grey skies. if they don’t achieve 100 gecs level of fame in the next 5 years I will be unhappy…
puerta negra - playa sola [EP] (2023)
genre: EBM, post-punk
FFO: book of love, yellow magic orchestra, skinny puppy, ministry
rating: 10/10
puerta negra is a spanish-speaking modern post-punk revival group formed in the US. the EP features danceable rhythms driven by drum machines and fantastically 80’s sounding synths. it listens like the best of the actual 1980’s new wave, techno, and goth scene. I had never heard of “EBM” before so trust I am definitely looking into that. the production is super hi-fi for a small relatively unknown group and will have you burning a hole in the dancefloor. feels like a high speed chase from an 80’s manga, perfect cut scenes and poses and all. tracks I would recommend: must be listened to in full. short but sweet EP!
hammok - look how long lasting everything is moving forward for once (2024)
genre: noise rock, post-hardcore
FFO: show me the body, gouge away
rating: 8.5/10
this is one of my favorite releases of ‘24. melodic noise rock jams that feel like black jeans and vans in the best way possible. headbangable anthems for the 30-something off-color elder emos like me. definitely more consumable than, say, early unsane, but you can tell it flows through the same artery just in a more modern context. songs I would recommend: H.F.D., Wannabe, Seance, Nothing’s Never Better
king krule - man alive! (2020)
genre: experimental indie, art rock
FFO: mk.gee, sean nicholas savage, water from your eyes
rating: 9/10
this is easily one of my favorite releases from king krule, who in my opinion has a star-studded catalog. I think it bridges the gap between the gritty, atmospheric first album six feet beneath the moon and the smooth-on-the-way-down space heavy of 2023. I actually think it marries all the best sounds from archie marshall including my least favorite album the OOZ. it may not be his most popular release but it has a lot of variety– from the mucky, stagnant themes of “stoned again” to the far out sparse production of “alone, omen 3” you will not be disappointed by this album’s pure astronomy. good for when you’re craving something slightly left of typical indie rock. songs I would recommend: stoned again, alone omen 3, comet face, energy fleets
thanks for reading,
Lizzy
