You've read that correctly, Windows NT 4.0 (and 3.51) now runs on the Nintendo GameCube, Wii and Wii U (via vWii). This is not emulation, it's running natively. This is possible because Microsoft ported Windows NT 3.5 and 4 to several RISC architectures such as DEC Alpha, MIPS and PowerPC.
Unfortunately it's not all sunshine and rainbows. There's no audio support, no networking features, you can only update to service pack 2 which limits you to DirectX 2, resolution is capped to 640x480 (as expected) and no support for the Wii remote as a mouse. So don't expect much besides running MS-DOS games and applications, maybe you'll be able to run office 95 and Space Cadet Pinball.
Either way, this is interesting, it makes me wonder what would have happened if it this was released in 2006, back when we all dreamed of having a htpc.
In case you want to try this for yourself, here's is what you need:
- Bootloader and Drivers
- Windows NT 4.0 ISO
- Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2
- Motorola SoftWindows32 (provides partial x86 emulation)
Optional if you want to develop/port software to this:
If you do plan to check this out by yourself, I hope you have fun. Maybe you'll fix this port even further. Also, it is worth nothing that the guy responsible for this port is working on providing sound and network support. Maybe one day this project can be used as a server for old software.
