This review contains spoilers, obviously.
One late night, I made the decision that I should watch Vampire Knight. I’ve heard people mention it before, so why not give it a try? I’ll probably have some fun out of it.
I make weird and sometimes downright awful decisions at night.
Plot summary:
Yuki Cross cannot remember anything past this one night that happened when she was 5. On a snowy night, she was saved from a vampire by Kaname Kuran (who is also a vampire). 10 years later, she’s now at Cross academy, serving as a member of the disciplinary committee with her adoptive BROTHER (remember that!) Zero, a vampire hunter. There are two classes at Cross Academy, one is the day class, which mostly contains humans, and then there’s the night class, which is filled with vampires.
The story:
It’s an absolute mess. During season 1, I was at least able to laugh at it for being ridiculous, it was so bad that it turned around into being good. I was able to identify most of the incoming plot twists, like Zero and Yuki being vampires. However, when season two started, it went back to being bad. It got so bad I couldn’t even laugh at it anymore I just stared at my screen blankly.
The show felt like it was taking itself way too seriously than it needed to, in other words, it was melodramatic. From what I can remember, most of the important character had sad backstories that I never gave a fuck about. No show, I don't care that Hanabusa said that he didn’t want to be Kaname’s friend when they were, like, 5 years old.
The last episodes were weird. Senri(night class member)’s EVILLL dad (who’s also related to Kaname?) comes back to life and says he wants to bring vampires back to their glory days or something. When he’s going through that plan, he just makes them drink each other’s blood. He also killed Kaname’s parents, which is why Kaname attacked him. However, for some reason Kaname can’t kill him with his own hands, so he just goes “okay I’ll make Zero kill you then lol”. They reveal that Zero i the vampire knight, whatever the fuck that means. The show ends with Kaname, Yuki, Zero, and a few other night class students leaving the school. Another member of the night class goes missing, and the other members who didn’t leave try to find him.
Like I said, a fun mess that just turned into a mess.
The Characters:
The main cast is being carried HEAVILY by Zero Kiryu. Yuki Cross (the main girl) and Kaname Kuran are annoying. Yuki can’t mind her business and always needs a man to protect her, while Kaname gave me creep vibes for most of the show. The night class is far more important than the day class, to the point where only 2 of the day class members have names. Other than that, the day class only exists to go “OMG THE NIGHT CLASS STUDENTS ARE SOOOOO HAWTTT >////<”.
More about the love triangle members, Yuki practically does nothing throughout the story. Even when Kaname turns her back into a vampire, and she has powers, she doesn’t even use them to save her FRIEND WHO’S BEING ATTACKED BY VAMPIRES. Instead, she just stands between them and goes “don’t hurt my friend!!” while the night class students do all the work for her. It’s strange, because she’s supposed to be a “pureblood princess” which means she’s EXTRA SPECIAL!!!
Kaname is supposed to be mysterious, but he fails at it miserably. His scheme to kill his crazy uncle has so many moving parts to the point of being over-complex. Despite him “loving” Yuki, he constantly manipulates her throughout the series because “it’s for her own good”. Kaname forces her to date him just so he can give answers about her past, which is just so…ew.
Zero, like I said, is carrying this show on his back. He has a backstory, and a clear motivation. His family was killed by a pureblood, Shizuka Hio. So Zero goes like “man FUCK all vampires I wanna murder them”, which make him become a vampire hunter. But even then, he also manipulates Yuki by guilt-tripping her.
The villains aren’t much either, Zero’s brother (I forgot his name) had such weak motivations. Like, yeah, it’s totally reasonable to want to kill your brother because he was born more healthy than you. Shizuka Hio was alright, and I get her motivations. If someone killed MY boyfriend, I would be pretty pissed, too. I didn’t like Senri’s dad/Kaname’s uncle, though, he was pretty sucky.
… Okay, I have to talk about the elephant in the room. The weird amount of incest in this show.
Like I’ve stated before, Zero and Yuki are adoptive siblings. Yuki goes with Kaname in the end, but what if I told you that them being together was ALSO incest? When Yuki turns into a vampire, she remembers that her family turned her into a human to protect her from her crazy uncle, who wanted to drink her blood. But she remembers something else, Kaname is her biological brother. The Kuran family also has a history of inbreeding, so that’s certainly…something.
In conclusion, Vampire Knight was not worth my time. The concept seemed neat, but it just ended up being wasted. So not only was it a waste of a pretty good concept, it was a waste of my FUCKING TIME. But if you like watching train wrecks, then this show might be for you!

my friend has the entire manga for vampire knight (idk why) and she let me read it . . . worst experience ever the only thing that motivated me to finish the series was the artwork
The anime was carried by the openings and endings, and from what ive heard the manga is so much crazier. Like kaname isnt her older brother, he's her 100000+ year old grandfather who's pretending to be her older brother
