REVIEW: “Absolutely” by Dijon

Today I listen to “Absolutely” by Dijon The singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and former 1/2 of the RnB group Abhi//Dijon makes his debut album after a string of singles and EPs. In this album Dijon goes through a meditation on love and all the highs and lows that goes into such a thing, all in a short 12 tracks and 32 minutes. The also album features contributions from the producer and guitarist ‘Mk.gee’ and i feel like his involvement definitely added to what makes this album great, with his signature guitar tone and production style. All of the song really feel both intimate and expansive thanks to the production and Dijon’s songwriting and singing, a great example of this being the track “Annie” where it somehow is able to feel both intimate and expansive at the same time with soaring harmonies and beautiful instrumentation. However the album does have its faults. I personally felt like some of the tracks were a little underwhelming in terms of things like arrangements and production like in the song Big Mike’s where it’s set up to have a grand Phil Spector-esc wall of sound like ending, but then just fades out and the song Annie where it was too short for my liking. A good representation that i think what this album should have been was the Absolutely film in which Dijon, Mk.gee, and all the other collaborators that helped on the album played some of the songs live and better then on the record, some highlights being Big Mike’s and Many times just to names a few. In conclusion while this album feels underwhelming, the ideas that a lot of the songs contain have a lot of potential that will hopefully get explored more in future releases and the songs themselves are fantastic 8/10 Fav tracks; Many Times, Annie, The Dress, Talk Down
