they're calling this the worst comeback of all time. writing is fun until i have to do it [2]. anyway get ready for this quadruple dipper

part 1 is here! :3

as a refresher - italicized tracks are interludes, bolded tracks are my standouts (a.k.a. a 4.5 or higher),  a ★ indicates my favorite song, and an × indicates my least favorite song

(p.s. clicking on an album cover it'll take you to some more info about the album on rateyourmusic)

i present my rating system, THE SANDWICH SCALE

★★★★½ - taylor ham egg and cheese / love

WEEK #12 -- death to all of them

i went to italy and all i got was disease. NOT in a cunty gaga way.

anyway, more backlog stuff

some of these are really short because spacehey kept deleting what i wrote and i'm so tired of writing about the same albums over and over again. "well why wouldn't you write them somewhere else first" well some of us are stupid🙄

Know by Heart - The American Analog Set | 2001

indie pop | indie rock | ambient pop

★★★½

it's albums like this that make albums like Really From fall apart, because albums like this are proof that you don't need to reinvent the wheel to make a good album. the production is absolutely scrumptious, the vocals actually work, it's refreshing to hear.

for the sappiest hopeless romantics

Whirlpool - Chapterhouse | 1991

shoegaze

★★

i expected this to suck because Breather and Pearl are awesome but i'm pleased to say otherwise. the production is very muddy but honestly i think it works for the vibe they were going for. Autosleeper does interrupt the flow the first two tracks set in favor of going for a more my bloody valentine ambient-esq thing but it's not the worst thing ever. it picks back up after that, not quite reaching the highs of the beginning but it gets pretty damn close.

Ocean Rain - Echo & The Bunnymen | 1984

post-punk

★★½

surprisingly boring? it's jangle pop with some gothic undertones, which isn't the worst thing to hear for 37 minutes straight, but it feels so much longer than that. The Killing Moon rips so hard tho

for depop shein resellers

Deathconsciousness - Have a Nice Life | 2008

post-punk | shoegaze | gothic rock

★★

kind of what i expected? from everything i've heard about this album i guess i expected the drone to shine through more. it's much less abrasive than i thought it would be, maybe less than i wanted? i mean, this is still genius music. i find it hard to comment on an album like this in this format, where everything is based on my first impressions, because an album like Deathconsciousness is a demanding listen that requires more than one. i also definitely feel like this would be a much cooler experience on physical media but i'm not dropping $16 on a cd just to listen to it like twice and write about it online and then never touch it again.

for the second worst guy you know

SAVED! - Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter | 2023

hymns | southern gospel | singer-songwriter | avant-folk

★★★½

i've only ever listened to one lingua ignota album, Sinner Get Ready. as much as i loved it, i found it to be a difficult listen. i'd have to be in a very specific headspace to dive into her other albums and that's a space i don't find myself in very often. same thing here. i will say this album aesthetically is masterfully made, it truly does feel like putting an old warped and dusty record on. i just don't think i can listen to this very often, not because i didn't like it, it's just kind of a lot. it's very uncomfortable, but i suppose that's the point isn't it

Transaudio - Pot Valiant | 1994

indie rock | midwest emo

★★★½

i do not have a good streak with midwest emo. perhaps this is a turn around? it's still pretty standard, though. but not offensively boring, i was still enjoying myself. it flows well and it's just catchy enough to keep me engaged but i don't see myself ever coming back

OIL OF EVERY PEARL'S UN-INSIDES - SOPHIE | 2018 | 1000TH RYM RATING!!!1 YEAAAAHHHH

deconstructed club | bubblegum bass

★★★½

1000 RATINGS YEAAAHHH!!!!! i saved my first foray into sophie's catalog for a big milestone like this because she was such a gift to music and this is such a special album. it's crazy how present sophie's music has been in my life despite having never actually listened to her, i've heard at least half of this album before. i liked this a lot but i want to love it more than i did. this just isn't what i normally listen to and if i ever come back to it i definitely think it'll grow on me. there's great moments but also some that just didn't click with me. even with that, you still have no choice to respect sophie as a musician because it takes a certain level of genius to make something like this.

more backlog and also gaga

you get one extra album here bc one of the albums i did for my 365 albums in a year thing got reclassified as an ep by the band so.. i'm filling the gap

Hex - Bark Psychosis | 1994

post-rock

★★★

Hex is regarded as essentially being the first post-rock album, or at least the album that lead to the coining of the term, which i didn't know before listening and i think is cool. while sonically beautiful, it doesn't quite develop its atmosphere to the same extent as some other post-rock releases that i love, at least not the kind of atmosphere i turn to post-rock for. the vocals are fine, they serve their purpose but they aren't as pleasing as their contemporaries. that's how i'd describe this entire album - pleasant, but not necessarily captivating in any way. i have little reason to return to this over like, godspeed you! black emperor or swans or something

for people who thought hating billie eilish in 2019 made you cool

  5. Fingerspit
  6. Eyes & Smiles
  7. Pendulum Man

Time 'n' Place - Kero Kero Bonito | 2018

twee pop | indie pop

★★★½

my kero kero bonito knowledge was limited purely to Flamingo, a song that has always deeply annoyed me, so this was a nice surprise, there's more alt-rock undertones here. it's sonically immature in a cute way also with a decent amount of interesting experimentation, there's a lot of moments where the guitar gets super distorted, as well as these moments of ambient static at the end of some songs and it adds an interesting dynamic to an otherwise well made but pretty standard twee pop album. i'm not crazy about the vocals in some parts, they sound lazy almost which does work in some parts but starts to feel monotonous after a while.

Mayhem - Lady Gaga | 2024

electropop | dance pop

★★

her nachos... the chips are crispy... the cheese is perfectly melted... WE'RE SO BACK BROS THE RECESSION IS HERE. the run from Disease to Perfect Celebrity is NASTYYY. the middle does lose it a little bit but tbh i think that's just a case of "i need to listen to it again because it was 5 am". there's plently of throwback moments to her older albums (admittedly none of which i have listened to in full since i was like 10..) but it still feels very distinctly Mayhem. the fact that every single song is over 3 minutes long on a pop album from one of the biggest stars in the world is so refreshing and very needed, the pacing is excellent. my only thing is that for an album called mayhem, there wasn't as much of it as i would've liked. anyway i still cannot believe you bitches shitting on Disease and if that was you unadd me we can't be friends /hj

Clean Up on Aisle Heaven - Malice K | 2022

slacker rock

★★★

picked for being a short listen because i have the migraine to end all migraines, it's pleasant background noise which is precisely what i need rn. it also doesn't need to be any more than that and i don't think it's trying to be. there is a hint of electronic experimentation here in Make the Scene but it just doesn't work here. as its own project maybe, but on this album it sticks out and not in a good way. a lot of slacker rock you find via the internet tends to be very diy and have a very obviously low budget and while there is that diy feel here, the production doesn't feel like my ears just popped so that's a plus.

for annoying bluesky people

Lands & People - Phil 'n' the Blanks | 1982

new wave | power pop

★★★½

i can't lie the only reason i wanted to listen to this is because phil 'n' the blanks is such a great name. phil and the blanks.. comedy. anyway it's pretty standard but quality (take a shot every time i use some variation of this phrase) 80's power pop. it's fun and it got me moving, the vocals are fun, i especially like the female vocals and i wish she had more large parts. the male vocals are also good but he reminds me of the trisha paytas king tut song and that kept making me laugh. this is one of those albums where i can confidently say if you've ever heard new wave/80's power pop then you can probably guess what this sounds like

for people who really like shoulder pads

Super Miracle Circuit - Sonic Coaster Pop | 2004

picopop | akishibu-kei

★★★½

(nooo i totally didn't only listen to this because there's a remix by plus-tech squeeze box haha....) the sweetest ear candy, i can feel my teeth rotting. not quite as chaotic as plus-tech squeeze box but still manages to keep up the energy (granted this should not be difficult because this is only like 20 minutes long). what it lacks in its colorfulness it makes up for in the fact that, again, this is only 20 minutes long. it means that the energy is non-stop like we gotta get this shit done QUICK. of course, the plus-tech remix does end up being my favorite because i fucking love plus-tech squeeze box, and that remix feels straight off of Fakevox

for people who had to get cavities filled every time you went to the dentist as a child

Big Ideas - Remi Wolf | 2024

dance-pop | pop rock

★★★½

i've been acutely aware of remi wolf since Photo ID blew up on tiktok back in 2020. i really liked that song because of how different it felt, it was a very sterile year for pop music imo and so to have a song that playful and out there (for 2020 standards) was very refreshing. remi keeps that energy i loved on Big Ideas, but ironically this album fell victim to the exact opposite - 2024 was SO stacked that i just never got around to her, which is unfortunate, because this is everything i wanted her to be back then. though, these songs are either great or decent with very little inbetween. the slower songs didn't do much for me but she's entertaining enough that it didn't feel like a chore to get through them

for people who tried way to be hard to be woke in 2020-22

Nemoderný chalan - Miroslav Žbirka | 1984

new wave | synthpop

★★★½

same thing as phil 'n' the blanks, if you've heard new wave you probably can guess what this sounds like, it's cute and light and airy and it's a lot of fun. i'm more of a fan of the synthpop twinges than the power pop of Lands & People though. the vocals are fantastic, they add a lot of personality to these songs for someone like me who most certainly does not know slovak. this only has 47 ratings on rym but if this were in english i think it would be a smash. if you're a fan of 80s synthpop i think this is worth a listen. i always enjoy older albums from across the globe because it's cool to me how albums like this existed that i could genuinely see being made by an american artist of the time.

for agent_smith specifically i think u would love this bro
