I want to learn how to sew, wich is better: Start learning with the machine or by hand?

I want to start sewing so bad so i could make upcycling clothes and this jeans wall hanger made by Megan Weller:

This is he wall hanger. Im planning saving some jeans to give it to an friend of my mom that knows sewing. She said that she doesent have the time to teach me so im desperate to find some help :(
