warning: this review is opinionated and not professional. also, i wrote this on my phone
I kind of knew something new was gonna drop any time now, but I was excited regardless when I openedmy Spotify app the other day TO SEE THIS MASTERPIECE APPEAR HFKSJSLAJDLAHFKSKDJKAL!! Here's my review:
The album generally (presentation)
I love the cover art for this album!! It gives me like a distinct Y2K feel, which i think was the goal. Also, the doodles and everything else surrounding it are sooo cute, although maybe not tattooworthy this time round x3 the little cat badge reminds me of aquasine
I feel like the EP name "I LIKE CHANGE" sums up the music styke in this one really well. I was expecting something slightly more forgotten-arcade-bossa-nova-jazz-esque, but luckly i didnt get any sort of "oh god you changed your music style shock" after reading the title. Good job on predicting that!
TALKING ABOUT THE MUSIC STYLE I really love the whole electronic music vibe whatever. It almost reminds me of brat by charlie xcx..¿
also, what happened to the song titles? writing in all caps now‽ i guess CHANGE is the agenda here, lol "^∆^
Songs
1 - NEVER COMING BACK:
OMG this is such a great start into the album, i love the way it doesn't waste in time in throwing you right into the drop. I feel like every second of this song has had love and careful consideration put into it with the little harmonies in the vocals and the other intrument voices filling in any measure which would otherwise be boring. Banger.
2 - GOODBYE!
I like this one too, it gives you some more space than the previous one. I love how it incorporates Terraria and HL sound effects, I'm a sucker for easter eggs in songs like that! As opposed to Forgotten Arcade the unnatural stiffness doesn't seem out of place here, in fact, I think it really fits the monotone dead vocals! Love it! ★w★
(the easter egg sound effects do give me the urge to open FL and edit in the terraria death sound during the brief silence following the sound effects, and maybe add in "do you know who ate all the donuts" later on in the song. it'd be so silly omg :3)
3 - DOESN'T MATTER
the transition into this song from the previous isn't bad, the single measure kinda just throws everything off and makes it a little wonky though. i guess it doesnt matter that much though
the intro for this is more frizkier than the other songs! (maybe i shouldnt be saying this. after all, he doesnt like to be only defined by his previous work cuz of all my fellas ptsd – i think)... this is probably the most forgotten-arcade-esque song in the whole EP though!
Even though the lyrics are simple, i really relate to it. i wish i could just ignore more of my respobsibilities like that. thanks for the kind encouragement mr frizk D fur or whatever your name was set to whenever you slipped up that one time and listed your full name on spotify. was that a thing? was that another artist? im going on a tangeant here.
4 - GIVE IT A REST
the transition was nice here, not really noteworthy. more smooth than the previous one.
this is the best track in here! the bass is punchy, the gorrveve... let me retry that... the groove is catchy and the saw-waves cut deep. its such a bop!! ( /^ω^)/♪♪
i do have a couple of criticisms! first of all, a less serious one. i feel like this song severaly lacks the hay! soundbyte. i feel like the song would be more complete if it played at the end of the bar, right around when silence is usually employed. since the silence does serve its purpose by making the song punchier tho, i'd be careful in how i'd add these in to make the song just that little more... frizky. more consideration and maybe a shitty fan edit is needed to prove my point.
next, i feel like some of the lyrics are a little awkward, idk.
the transition into the next song is smooth, though... a little unfortunate
5 - Leave Me GONE
ಠ︵ಠ
This is the part where I get overly opinionated. Buckle up.
I really like the song intro and the whole vibe. it almost builds up a... soundscape, of sorts? the soft guitar, the bass, the sliding on the guitar.
this is interrupted by possibly the most god-awful lyrics i have heard. im sorry to be so harsh, but it really threw me off. the rest of the album was really good, just to have several verses lazily repeated and phrases thrown around until theyre completely meaningless. i cringed at this song. it's not poetic. the backing track is so good too, it's really a shame. it's only enjoyable for me if I ignore what the lyrics, and I don't want to have to do that.
Content-wise, the song is another perspective on the break-up which is described in "Leave u GONE" in Forgotten Arcade, so I somewhat expected... idk, something else. maybe somethinf better. definitely not this.
Feel free to roast me for my hot take.
Conclusion
Overall, strong album. I think it's an interesting step into a new direction, and I definitely see Frizk making it big by aiming at the mainstream a bit more. I the style change was hinted at by some of his other recent singles, such as "not asking 4 much", which you should also totally go and listen to for the record.
