3/26/25: fantastic planet (6/10)

So, I decided to watch this movie on a whim, and it was definitely.....an experience.

Visually, this film was STUNNING, it felt like I was watching a moving water color painting. I loved how thought out the scenery in every shot was, and I can see some people getting bored by how drawn out some sequences are, but I understand why the sequences are like that from an artistic point of view.

now, when it comes to the story..I'm honestly impartial. I'm aware that this film is based on a novel and we all know how adaptations can go, and In general, both the film and the novel are French, so the story doesn't and wouldn't hold as much cultural significance with me as it would the intended audience. I also watched the subbed version, so there is a high chance that important story beats just got lost in translation.

with all that being said, I really don't have much to say about the story seeing as it was extremely straightforward. It was your basic oppressed vs the oppressor story but with an interesting twist. I think the only other story I could compare it to is Planet the of the apes (which I still haven't seen, the og's or the new ones). All in all, if you like watching movies for vibes or for the art, this one is for you. I have plenty movies in my top 100 that are pretty much just vibes, so I'm not gonna call the film bad just because I think the visuals carried it more than the plot. Ankh
