Excerpt 9

When I began this book, I told my readers it would be the last book on Hannah Monore's story, they took it to mean I was killing her character. I got an earful. I had never imagined a character I created could come to mean so much to people.

Failure's Legacy book 8, The Songbird and the Broken Angel is a dark chapter in the life of Hannah Monroe. After surviving the ordeal in South America by relying on others, Hannah compensates by turning to other buisness ventures to accumulate wealth and power. Uncle Sergie's passing creates friction inside his crime family and the farmhouse that served as a sanctuary for the family before has become a prison. Her body guards are replaced by Russian mobsters as Sergie's heirs posture towards a civil war threatening to sweep Hannah, Jennifer and their children into the chaos.

Jennifer's mental health is deteriorating, PTSD from the jungle, depression and paranoia have her a shell of her former self. A gut wrenching betrayal, an assassination attempt death of people close to them exacerbated her issues. This scene more than any other is pivotal for Hannah, it follows an assault made on Jennifer by one of the Russians assigned as security. Hannah crosses the final line from rock diva to matriarch as she does what she must to protect her loved ones.

I contemplated sharing ine if the humorous scenes, of which there are several, but I feel since I started this blog series to talk about character development, this scene was crucial, it is however violent.

“It’s not pretty, don’t do anything too stupid.” Bill said, handing a tablet to Hannah. Hannah pressed play and watched the video replay of the man who was shot walking up behind her wife, dragging her off the tombstone she was sitting on, pushing her down and trying to climb on top of her. She watched the short scuffle ending with Jennifer shooting the man in his ballistics  vest causing him to writhe on pain while pulling at the fastens of the body armor.

Hannah snapped. She marched out the back door, all of the Russians were gathered around their injured fellow at the picnic table. She could hear them already they spoke in Russian as she approached.

“Both those whores need good Russian cock American cock is so bad it makes them prefer pussy.” The man with two ice packs on his bruised chest was saying in Russian while his buddies were laughing.

Hannah walked up without a word, aimed Jennifer’s pistol at the attacker and fired twice into his already bruised chest. She handed the tablet to one of the other men to see why.

She looked at the group of men, her jaw was set, her eyes narrow and when she spoke her words icy, “Real women won’t fuck a Russian for fear of having a coward’s baby.” Hannah said in Russian. The men looked at her in disbelief, none knew she could understand them when they spoke badly about her in their native tongue. She let the weight of the revelation that she had been studying their language sink in then she addressed them in English.
“You are here at Peter’s insistence, not mine. While you are here, you will respect me and my family, as you would Peter in his home. You are here to provide protection, but as you see, I am not weak, neither is my wife.” She stood there as two of the remaining three nodded then bowed their heads. The third guy looked at her coldly unblinking. Hannah spun on her heel and started to return to her house.
When Peter learns of this, he will send men to come and kill you, I will laugh when this happens.”  The man who had stared said in Russian his course voice spoke with conviction, he believed this to be true.
Hannah turned back around and fired one shot, she hit him in the neck. He clutched the wound as blood gushed out with each heartbeat. His eyes wide, he sank to his knees trying to speak but no sound came out except a faint gurgling. Hannah watched until the life left his body.
Hannah turned around and saw Jennifer on the porch, she was holding a rifle that seemed far too big for her tiny frame. She was wearing the jacket she had been gifted by Tony. Jennifer was ready for combat even as her PTSD was worsening. Hannah walked to her and guided her back inside. She sent Peter the video along with a message in an encrypted email Killed him for this another rudely questioned me for it so I killed him as well two are fine, or they can go home but if they act out, I will kill them as well.

Peter sent a single word reply.
