Absurdism is a philosophy that states that the universe, or life, is irrational and meaningless. The general idea is that trying to find meaning in life directly results in conflict, as there is none, and therefore existence as a whole is absurd. But if trying to find meaning leads to direct conflict, then why should we choose to continue living? Because choosing to live despite there being no meaning to it is the truest expression of our freedom, depicting that we actually do not require meaning in life to live. In fact the opposite, as there being no inherent meaning means that we do not need to achieve any sort of specific tasks within our life, and can live however we please, or see fit. Now this does not eliminate the variable of social responsibility, which we must still take into consideration, however it does eliminate the moral obligation to ourselves, as we alone must live with our choices, and other than that they have no true meaning (that is until we die, which we could choose to do at any given time). Normally, this conflict is characterized by the internal component, human nature, colliding with the external component, the nature of the universe. However, some more recent theories suggest both components to be internal. That is, the ability to see through the absurdity of any ultimate purpose, and the inability to stop caring about such purposes. This philosophy has roots in existentialism, but differs from it in that existentialists often believe that there being no meaning in life means we should create one for ourselves. Another philosophy it tends to quite similarly resemble is nihilism, to which it differs in the sense that nihilists treat there being no meaning in life as an isolated fact. People usually take these facts to mean that absurdists are more pessimistic than existentialists or nihilists, which could be stated in some contexts, is however not inherently true, as there being no meaning in life and not having the ability to create it entails that we have nothing in our life that we must complete, and can therefore can live entirely as we wish, as previously stated. Practically, absurdism can be viewed as the strangeness, or absurdity, surrounding the fact that we continue to hold such importance in our everyday tasks, even ones that are completely unnecessary. On a more theoretical view, it is the belief that the world is indifferent to our attempts at finding meaning.
