Okay, I need to get this off my chest because I see it happening constantly, and honestly, it’s frustrating. Dazai from Bungou Stray Dogs (an anime that you def should go check out btw!!) is one of the most layered, complex, and psychologically intricate characters in anime, yet the way the community perceives him is so painfully surface level that it makes me want to scream into the void.
Let me make this clear: Dazai is NOT just ‘the funny suicidal guy.’ He is NOT just “hot” or “daddy” or whatever other shallow takes flood social media. Every time I see people reduce him to some quirky meme lord, I feel like I’m watching one of the most well-written characters get completely stripped of everything that makes him so fascinating.
Dazai is a deeply broken man who hides his pain behind layers of manipulation, humor, and calculated detachment. He is haunted by his past, burdened by a self-destructive nihilism that he never truly escapes from, even when he tries to do good. His transition from the Port Mafia to the Agency isn’t some simple redemption arc—it’s him desperately clinging to the only form of meaning he can find, yet still acknowledging the monster he used to be. This man doesn’t just ‘want to die’ for the joke of it; it’s tied to his entire philosophy, his trauma, and his inability to see himself as deserving of happiness.
But do people talk about this? Do people analyze his actions, his psyche, his contradictions? No. Instead, all I see is “OMG he’s so fine” or “haha goofy Dazai moment.” And look, I get it. He’s attractive. He’s charismatic. He has funny moments. But when that’s ALL people see? When they ignore everything else about him? That’s when it gets frustrating.
And I know, at the end of the day, people can enjoy characters however they want. I’m not here to gatekeep Bungou Stray Dogs appreciation. But when you reduce such an incredibly written character to just his looks or his memes, you’re missing out on what makes him truly great. I just wish more people would actually take a step back and think about why Dazai is the way he is, instead of treating him like a walking aesthetic.
So yeah. That’s my rant. Love Dazai, appreciate Dazai, but please, for the love of literature, stop reducing him to a TikTok thirst trap.

FR. I LOVE this. Chuuya and dazai are two of my favorite characters and it pains me when I see just how much people mischaracterize them and others in the show. enjoy what you enjoy but they are more then pretty faces
EXACTLY!! You get it!!
Chuuya and Dazai are such insanely well-written characters, and it physically hurts seeing them reduced to just ‘hot’ or ‘funny’ when there’s SO much depth to them. Like, people are out here missing the best parts of their characters!
Appreciate the looks, sure, but at least acknowledge the layers too! I’m so glad someone else feels the same way!
