They're ancient: Jellyfish have been around for over 500 million years, making them one of the oldest multi-organ animals on Earth. They predate dinosaurs!
They lack a brain: Despite their complex behaviors, jellyfish don't have a brain, heart, or even blood. They rely on a simple nervous system to detect their surroundings and react.
Some are bioluminescent: Certain jellyfish species, like the crystal jelly, can produce their own light through a chemical process called bioluminescence. This is often used for defense or attracting prey.
They clone themselves: Some jellyfish species can reproduce asexually through cloning. If a jellyfish is cut in half, each half can regenerate into a new, complete jellyfish.
One species is potentially immortal:Turritopsis dohrnii, also known as the immortal jellyfish, can revert back to a polyp stage after reaching maturity. This process can repeat indefinitely, theoretically making them biologically immortal.
