As a child you have no expectations,
Lest you live rich and lavishly,
An occasional chore or errand.
As an adult you get thrown into society,
A mere “Good luck in life” to your back,
And what are you meant to do?
You have to get a job or you’re broke,
You have to have a roof over your head or your homeless.
You have to pay bills and taxes or you get everything taken.
Why should we learn maths but not adulting?
Learn science instead of practical medicine?
Learn history and yet avoid learning how to cure mental illness?
As a child you hear, “Be good,”
As a child you hear, “Play fair,”
As a child you hear, “Share your toys,”
But never uttered is, “I’m proud of you!”
Never murmured is, “You’re doing amazing!”
Not once mumbled is, “I’m impressed!”
But that’s alright because we learn on our own;
We grow on our own;
We achieve on our own;
We advance on our own;
We act on our own;
We struggle on our own;
We make our own goals and expectations;
Nobody else has to care as long we do about ourselves.
Of course that leaves us a sense of guilt;
One derived from never truly impressing anyone;
From being the second option;
From never being understood or accepted;
Slowly though we don’t seek it out;
Depression takes it’s hold;
As do other things we wish we could control;
While they make slow us down though;
They also help us grow further.
All sorts of things can come from neglect;
The worst of all attachment issues;
Inability to control emotions properly;
The belief we deserve the pain;
A lack of empathy for others;
A sense of hatred for others;
A longing for recognition and forgiveness;
A hope for belonging somewhere;
A desire to make a difference in the world.
