not always feeling hot about music so I add things to a draft throughout the week when I am feeling positive... really excited about some of this stuff this week and already have some ideas for next week. I feel like there is an endless arsenal of things to talk about here. I can't go on forever as I'm not into blabbing on but here are a few short thoughts about albums I love <3
tirzah - trip9love...? (2023)
genre: alternative r&b, hypnagogic pop, experimental
FFO: xiu xiu, vegyn, mount kimbie, oklou
rating: 8.5/10
this is an artist I have loved since 2018's breakout hit record Devotion but for some reason haven't kept up with much since then. Since Devotion she has release three more full length records, and trip9love...? is the most recent, while in my opinion being the strongest. tirzah offers the highest quality production of her experimental, neo-industrial sound with this most recent endeavor. perhaps not as heavy hitting as 2018's record regarding main themes and melodies, but trip9love...? is just as strong if not stronger in production. there is again a mix of electronic and analog instruments which are blended seamlessly. feels like perusing an eastern street fair, the clamor of activity layered with performers and people speaking in foreign tongues... songs I would recommend: F22, Promises, 2 D I C U V, Stars
six finger satellite - severe exposure (1995)
genre: synth punk, noise rock
FFO: suburban lawns, screamers, brainiac
rating: 10/10
obviously I'm quite biased toward screamy and chaotic noise and punk, and this album is one of my top 25 OAT so of course I'm going to sing its praises. have you ever wondered what a sexy and simultaneously asexual album sounds like? look no further. a must-listen for anyone who enjoys chaos, energy, and harshness while still maintaining melody. the vocalists voice is growling and purring (sexy) over the modulated computerized unsexy synths. feels like marrying your computer who appears as a pixelated sexy woman and she becomes sentient. I have a playlist based on this album called "femme technologic" which features music that encapsulates all the abrasive (and unabrasive) friction of this album. songs I would recommend: Rabies, Board the Bus, Parlour Games, but the whole album is incredibly solid. wild experience :^)
Bert Jansch - Bert Jansch (1965)
genre: folk, primitive folk, singer songwriter
FFO: Arthur Russell, Bob Dylan, John Fahey
rating: 9.5/10
we love a moment of juxtaposition... simple yet deft, bare yet lush, rural yet classy. one of my favorite folk albums ever, this is a huge standout in the genre of primitivism- the musical movement. to be honest I'm not a huge folk fan in general, so I don't know exactly what to point to when it comes to songwriting or production here specifically. this album focuses heavily on songwriting and melody, but what more would you expect from an album featuring one man and a guitar? hearing Jansch slap and scratch around on that thing allows for percussive moments as well. features the bare bones but so expertly played that it sounds like multiple instruments, so not lacking musically in any sense. feels like tying up your horse at the saloon and taking a boat ride down the Mississippi... songs I would recommend: smokey river, alice's wonderland, running from home, dreams of love
norma jean - wrongdoers (2013)
genre: post-hardcore, metalcore, (nu-metal?)
FFO: korn, the chariot, the fall of troy
rating: 8/10
this album is heavy but not harsh. carried by strong melodies, it's hitting all the classic metalcore and nu-metal notes, literally and figuratively. I'm not an expert on these genres so it is difficult to delineate musically what differs it from nu-metal in terms of genre. when I compared the vocals to three days grace in a facebook group (lol) I got bashed in the comments, but I don't see what the big difference is there. feels like driving in your friend's dad's car in 2006 flipping through his CD booklet... songs I would recommend: hive minds, wrongdoers, the potter has no hands
Thanks again for reading and also I love you and also goodbye, farewell,
XoXoXo, Lizzy
