DISCLAIMER 2: This blog post is an open discussion and simply my opinion/POV. I wanna hear if you agree, disagree and why. Feel free to comment ur opinion, but keep it respectful.
Hyperpop is one of my fav genre evers. From laptop!! by dreamcache to Ibitbt by 3l3d3p to skinwalker by Souxxie Sixxta to ferrari by Alice Gas its just so creative. It also leans on leftist politics, feminism, gender expression, queer/POC freedom and meme culture which i absolutely love.
But youll never catch me listening to its subgenre scenecore without at least feeling disgusted, or weird.
I dont hate scenecore for how it sounds, im a huge fan of EDM being mainly all i listen to, and, as i mentioned, I love hyperpop.
Its bc of the obvious romantization of serious issues, sexism, co-assosiations w r4pe and problematic paraphilias, using punk emo and scene as mere aesthetics, ect. that make me grow a hatred from it.
WHAT REALLY IS SCENECORE?
As said before scenecore is a subgenre of hyperpop, it draws inspiration from the scene subculture and nightcore. It became popular on social media in the early 2020s. It is characterized mainly by the pitched-up vocals, "nostalgic" melodies and the weird lyrics.
The lyrical themes often explore edgier topics compared to the original scene subculture, like mental health, gore and drugs, but instead of using it to bring more awarness, it simply feels like its a huge romantization of everything, as the themes in the lyrics seem to be the same and are treated the same.
ITS NOT "NEW SCENE MUSIC", PART OF "SCENE REVIVAL" OR RELATED TO SCENE AT ALL
The music genres for the scene music dont change just cuz its a new generation.
For context, genres that represent the scene subculture are Crunkcore (Ex.: Dot Dot Curve, Brokencyde) Pop Punk (Ex.: blink-182, Avril Lavigne), Metalcore/Deathcore (Ex.: I Set My Friends On Fire, EATMEWHILEIMHOT!), Post-Hardcore (Ex.: Pierce the Veil, A Day To Remember), Happy Hardcore (Ex.: Disko Warp, S3rl), Nightcore, Pop Rock (Ex.: Paramore, Fall Out Boy) and a genre themed as "myspace music" (Ex.: Millionares, Hellogoodbye).
The reason why some people started assossiating scene with hyperpop was because during the corona virus lock in, the 2020 tiktok alt fashion (Also know as 2020 E-kid) surfaced. This alt style was and is assossiated with the hyperpop music genre as it was at its peak in 2020 to 2022. This style had a lot of inspo from scene, as both featured funny hats (like the famous floppy ears bunny hat), kandi, neon clothes ect. which i believe lead people to confuse the two, so scene started to be assossiated with hyperpop as well, later then creating this own genre.
PLAGERISM IS A PROBLEM THEY ALL GET AWAY WITH
One of the most famous scenecore songs ever ''HANDS UP!'' by 6arelyhuman is just a version of ''Hey Baby'' by Pitbull and T-Pain with edgier lyrics and an extra beat over.
Most scenecore artists use the beat or even lyrics of a song that used to be popular back in 2000s-2010s, only changing a few words or adding extta beats. I get that music parodies always existed, yet, when you copy almost everything and get away with it by saying its a "sample" or something like that, naming it youre own thing, and publising in apps like spotify, apple music and iTunes, there should be legal action in my opinion. Most times they just use the beat, change lyrics + add an orginal beat, but they still use a song that isnt theirs, which is the main focus of those songs most times.
Music is all about creativity as it is a form of art. Its so unncessary for a this to happen in such a big amount.
ROMANTIZATION OF DISGUSTING CRIMES AND THINGS THAT CAN RUIN SOMEONES LIFE

''ecstacy'' by SUICIDAL-IDOL
we all know what the ''r-'' means.
''VIOLENT'' by kaneda7
this is the most edgylord shit ever holy shit get help??
''one more time!'' by H3ARTCRUSH
Simply a romantization of manipulation.
''I H3ART Y0U'' by Boy Fantasy
Gore f3t1sh
''HANDS UP!'' by 6arelyhuman
Scene girls being sluts is an infamous stereotype. And in general the idea of a man calling a girl "slut" is misogynist
Self explainatory.
Obsession with self-h4rm and gore, its a very obvious romantization, if not a f3tish even.
This is not a one case.
MOST POPULAR SCENECORE ARTISTS ARE WEIRDOS
this whole thing was made me feel kinda sick so i dont feel like typing much, anything i will edit this later.

A HORRIBLE REALITY I FEEL LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE IGNORING
Its time to realise and admit it, scenecore was created a safe space for these disgusting people to share their horrible and illegal f3tishes and desires through songs, where instead of people telling them to get help or call the police, they listen to the songs legally, supporting the artists and giving them fame they dont deserve at all.
Of course, I couldnt go off without blaming tiktok a little a bit for this. They created really fucked up parasocial relationships with most of these people, defending them no matter how weird they are and, of course, made this genre popular in first place
HOW FAR CAN WE REALLY SEPARATE THE ART FROM THE ARTIST?
In better words, if an artists art describes their horrible wishes and fantasies, what is the point of liking their art? There should always be a limit, for everything.
For the same reason you dont like art of an artist who draw illegal paraphilias but was a nice artstyle, i wont like the music of a scenecore artist who sings about having a scene $lut who wants to cut her wrists and k1ll herself just bc theres a catchy beat.
This subgenre of hyperpop goes angst hyperpop created.
I dont like scenecore and i believe it will be hard to change my mind, but still this is an open discussion so please comment your opinion, I will read and reply to all comments.

i was young and an impressionable teen back when 6arelyhuman was popular and their songs of making sh seem "quikry and cool" make me think i 1) cant be scene without doing those things and 2) almost get me into shtwt :skull:
HOLY SHIT I HOPE UR BETTER NOW but what you mentioned is like a serious issue, baby scenes will think thats scene music and get the wrong picture for it even maybe danger themselves like you almost did.
On the better side it seems like 6arlyhuman doesnt talk so much about sh
by †FELIX_FACADE†; ; Report
I'm still in my valleys but im going back up day by day so thank you <3
and yeah i fell to that pitfall most baby scenes go through these days and even though 6arelyhuman doesn't talk bout much sh in their songs now [thankfully]
i worry other scenecore musicians glorify sh in the same vein,
and again, ty broski

ive been saying this for so long 🙏 the romanticisation of g*re and sh is insanee

Yall are so sensitive. I like it when my sh is romanticized. and fictional gore is not hurting you.

by †FELIX_FACADE†; ; Report
No, I do not need "help" dont pretend to be concerned abt me when we both know you arent.
And for ash, its not hurting anyone, plus i AM a person who struggles with sh so dont speak over me
by Seth; ; Report
so am i lol? it affects me a lot seeing ppl romantize something thats ruining my mental health. its not any different from ppl that romantize stuff like gr00ming to me.

I loves scene core but mostly because I didn't know what the lyrics said. THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH FOR MAKING ME AWARE OF THIS! I think that this stuff is insane and should have someone moderating the shit people are saying in their songs. This is so gross... Also thank you for re-directing me to more songs near the top of the blog that aren't just disgusting

I WILL be showing this to my friends and anyone else I can get my grubby little hands on. THANKS AGAIN YOUR AWESOME AND KEEP SPREADING AWARENESS!!!

This post gave me a huge better insight about scenecore and why it was hated, and from someone who is currently learning about this subculture and is starting to get into this fashion too
Im glad this somewhat helped:,) i hope you have fun exploring the subculture!

Thanks, but I happened to stumble upon another post similar to this that has a different perspective to scenecore and they said that scenecore was more on the Kandi raver side that is much related with S3RL’s music , but like I am unsure if that’s was true though but but there was one part of the video where it says that you have to be at least 18 or above to be scene which I kinda find with a side of saying “ehhh…?” Now but I somewhat read this post and the video on a bad headspace so it made me feel panic and felt guilty to discover scene as a teen so I don’t think the one I’ve watched was more reliable
by Francis; ; Report
No thats.... a lie. Scenecore is based of nightcore and embraces issues that were romantized on the early days of scene on myspace. Also you dont need a specific age to be in a subculture? Scene is for everyone.

I love this type of music so much! But I agree with you 100% some of the songs I’ve seen + the lyrics in some of the songs I’ve heard in this genre are absolutely insane and uncalled for, and it’s so upsetting sometimes to see because I really like this genre but I agree it’s really really REALLY weird some of the covers+titles+lyrics some of these songs have

I personally love Hyperpop, but Scene and Scenecore are 2 different things but I always call myself Scene because Scenecore embarrasses me. The subgenre itself is really awesome but the community is not. People romanticise S*H and g0r3 in their songs. It sucks because I love Hyperpop Scenecore.

im so glad u made this its so so weird that so many scenecore songs are about scene girls, gore, sucicide, and sh
✧˖°.
EXACTLY. honestly i get SO uncomfortable when artists like 6arelyhuman straight up romanticize self harm, "barcode shawty"... are we deadass rn
Exactly. It saddens me because it's one of my favourite music genres and it all sounds so fun but people can't use their words correctly. SH is a struggle NOT 👏 SOMETHING 👏 THAT 👏 MAKES 👏 YOU 👏 ROMANTIC 👏 OR 👏 HOT!

i'm really glad that ur speaking up about this problem, i hat it when ppl romanticize such fragile and serous topics. i don't really agree on the 'copying the song" part being problematic because again i think it's a characteristic of scene core and idk many samples are cool but again, as u said, it's ur opinion. again, really glad that u made this post and are spreading awareness :)))
Henry !!
That's fucked , I listen to rebzyyx because I thought it's relatable . Not in romanticing way but more like what I truly feel . Now it feels weird to know they're romanticizing it . That's messed up . That's gonna take awhile for me to seperate the artist from the song since oh god , their music makes me feel little secure in a way ... [no it doesn't make sense , but thats how i unfortunately cope]
Now 6arelyhuman , Ong I got heavily disgusted . I like the song cuz it's hella catchy , but the more I listen the more it's too much s/h and it's rubbing me the wrong way . It sounds cool until it's repeatedly over and over again and just listen to their not so sickening lyrics music . "Bimbo suicide" was one ... That's the first song I got extremely weirded out , like , feeling disgusted .
Really glad I came upon your blog , srs I wouldn't notice these stuff unless someone points it out . /pos
I think rebzyyxs songs are actual vent songs but many of ppl that make similar stuff to him have actual fetishes (ik that "im so obsessed with you" is pretty much a vent about bpd for example), but he mentions sh too much in my opiniom to be romantizing it at least a bit:( Its okay to take your time doing this, coping is hard and slow, i dont believe its any different with this.

I didn't even notice, lots of scenecore I listened to was stuff like "Faster and Harder" "Hands Up!" I just thought of it as music to make myself feel hot to.
With the romantication of harmful topics like self harm I'd say Rebzyyx is the number one offender of this and if you think these lyrics are bad OHHH BOYY, Rebzyyx is absolutely fucked and one of their fans pretty much r*ped me last summer and stole my money :(
THAT LAST PART IS INSANE??? I really believe you should speak openly about this if you can. I will give you my help and support is needed
by †FELIX_FACADE†; ; Report
Yeah I completely agree, rebzyyx is absolutely insane.... Also I hope your doing okay...People suck :/

i completely agree but like, is it bad to still listen to some of these creators (hoshie star and more) cause like i like the beat of their songs
In my opinion yeah it is
by †FELIX_FACADE†; ; Report
I mean, it's fine to enjoy the song but not very much with the lyrics and meaning. But listening from the source (the original artist) just gives them money for the things they did

Milan!! :3
I whole heartedly agree, as someone who is into scene I admittedly got scene and scenecore mixed up and ended up listening to scenecore. The lyrics I heard made me so grossed out, so much of it is terrible and when ever you bring it up people say "but i wike the music :(" or "separate the art and the artist!!!11"(which is literally impossible, their singing about the same shit they do) and it bothers me so bad.
Yeah it happend to me too when i starting on scene. I though scenecore was scene music for a long while and because i wasnt fully fluid in english i was mostly just focusing on the beats and not the lyrics. I think tiktok specially made me believe it was okay to like scenecore despise the MANY disgusting flaws

I really appreciate you bringing this topic to light, I wasn't aware how bad this situation has gotten. Truly disturbing how people can take these heavy topics and make light of them as if s/h and gore isn't a serious issue. It just feels extra icky how these lyrics are put over a party beat.
ImNotAlternative
Tbh, I listened to it cause it sounded good. Now I'll pay attention to the lyrics. Thanks 4 letting me know
