thoughts on Ranka from OHSHC?

What are yall's thoughts on Ranka from OHSHC?

Being a queer character from the early 2000s, she def isn't considered the best trans representation for a variety of reasons, and there is a lot about how the show portrays her that's highly problematic, but I also can't help but love her.

I think one of the reasons I love her is that she's not only unashamedly herself, but she also feels like a real human being who is also queer. Like, you see her be a person, get excited about Haruhi making friends and dressing her up, she has other friends like Misuzu, she values her sleep and is NOT a morning person lol, etc.

I also really like that we see her not only all dolled up, but also in casual clothes. Like, it's realistic that most women don't dress hyper femme all the time. Sometimes you're at home just chilling in sweats and a tshirt, and being trans doesn't change that. I feel like there's an expectation on trans women to be hyper feminine all the time in order to "prove" their womanhood, but Ranka is as feminine as she wants when she wants.

Idk, smth about her just feels so real to me, though she def isn't perfect trans/queer rep... far from it, but that has less to do with her character and more to do with the way the story frames her at times.

I'm curious to hear opinions on how yall feel about her in the anime or manga, especially if you're a trans woman/femme or drag queen. And ESPECIALLY if you're an older queer. I feel like her character just resonates more with an older queer audience, and i think younger ppl will have a much more critical take that misses a bit of nuance and understanding of the times she comes from. I'm curious to hear all opinions though.

Anyway, I'll leave you with some quick sketches I did of her. I really love it when she wears that bandana lol

Drawing of Ranka from Ouran High School Host Club wearing a t-shirt, sweatpants and bandana. Her hair is long and wavy in the front, and tied in a ponytail in the back.
