Our whole "reality" as individuals is constructed by our brains. And if such a brain communicates that a mild inconvenience is the worst thing to ever happen to the user to which it belongs, does the objective reality even matter at all? For the individual, the perceived reality IS one and the same as objective reality. All of this to say; each and every one of our feelings are valid. And the statement "it's in your head" will remain one of the stupidest to be uttered and perhaps the most destructive to one's mental health. That is because, quite literally, everything is in your head, Positive and negative!
So, instead of invalidating the feeling of people with mental illnesses. We should comfort them and be there for them; you can't expect to help a person dealing with depression for example by insisting that what they're dealing with is not real. That often only leads to more self-loathing and digs them deeper into the ditch they may already find themselves trapped in. The correct course of action would be showing them that it's no as bad as it seems, as in, convince *them through action. Be the shoulder they can cry on, don't be judgemental, and most importantly, be kind and forgiving towards them.
*Or rather, convince their subconscious, because, as stated earlier: They have no conscious control of their mental illness. And the subconscious is notoriously stubborn. So, please, be patient.
Note: I don't think this necessarily applies to one mental illness or even just to mentally ill people. But they are notoriously mistreated in our current society, and I hope that I can help change that in my lifetime. It doesn't matter if it's helping a singular person, that's enough for me <3
Thanks for reading my mini-vent, sometimes I just kinda get the urge to write something :D. If you have any suggestions for things to write about or feedback for my writing, feel free to drop them in the comments!! (I'm trying to get better at English through writing since it's not my first language :P)
(and btw, I'm mostly talking with the knowledge of my own past experience dealing with mental issues, so if you have something to add from your own experience feel free!!!)
