Not bad! The Watchers (2024) is a middle-of-the-road monster movie that is quite fun for a change of pace. Inspired by Irish mythology, the setting is amazing, and is constantly a beautiful movie to look at. The story falls short in some instances in my opinion, but going into this film with an open mind makes for a fun night with friends. Very little gore, very few jumpscares, and a PG-13 rating, perfect for someone who is just getting into darker fantasy. It can currently be found on Netflix.
🩸🩸🩸SPOILER WARNING🩸🩸🩸
This movie had a fantastic idea but extremely poor execution. I wanted SO MUCH to like this, evil faeries are seriously underrated as a horror monster. But I found the main character Mina to be annoying. She constantly seemed self-centered, and while it was clear the purpose of her character arc was to reconnect with her sister and forgive herself, it honestly felt like a throw-away side plot. The ending suffers from the same problem movies like The Babadook and even the musical The Producers do, it’s 20 minutes too long. The final stretch of this movie feels like running a mile, the pacing is suddenly much slower, and the final battle with the halfling was extremely anticlimactic. They quite literally defeat the monster with the power of friendship. I suppose I can’t be too harsh though, the sheer joy I got from watching Darwin the parrot was by far worth the Netflix subscription.
