Chapter 2.
Homecoming!
Two days had passed and nothing had happened Arania was sitting on the couch reading Hindu myths while her
dad Leo was in the kitchen washing dishes humming a unfamiliar.
It sounded light and airy the melody drifted from the kitchen, a gentle, lilting tune that reminded her of a bird song and it soothing to hear Arania closed her book setting it down on the table.
She turned on the TV and then it started playing the news the news reporter starts “Hi I’m Judy Thompson here’s the weather report as you can see there are rain storms flooding most school and public areas. So you know what that mean kids no school for a months until flooding stops!”. With that Arania turn the TV off and gets up and begins to walk to the kitchen.
Once reaching there after a few short steps her dad is still humming the same soothing song the song is happy but her fathers face is sad and mono.His shoulders slumped slightly, and a tremor ran through his hands as he scrubbed the plate.
Arania nudges her dad. Nothing.
She tries again.
Nothing.
“Dad are you okay?” Arania said receiving no answer “Dad what that song you’re humming.” “Huh wha-?” Leo seemed to wake up from zone moment
“Dad what’s that song?” She asked once more
“What song?” Leo says with a look of confusion
Arania sighed “Never mind dad I just wanted to tell you school is going to to be out for at aleast a month okay?”
“Yeah okay.”.
Leo stop washing dishes and straight up left. Arania felt worried anxiety overwhelmed with her later today she was supposed to visit her cousins for their birthday and stay over for a week. All she could think about was this.
Will he be okay when I’m gone?
Arania started shaking her head was pounding.
What if his breathing stops?A storm of these questions flooded Arania’s mind until she heard the humming again it seemed to calm her completely.
Arania ran up the stairs her dad’s room door was open Leo was just sitting on his bed looking out his open window to see his flower garden it was beautiful filling with plant all over the world it seemed to be the one thing aside for Arania that kept Leo sane.
He was stilling humming that song. Arania left going back to her room laying down on her green bed then she got up and started packing for her week long stay at her cousins Omaira and Saniyah.
Finally finishing she was ready she went back to her dad’s?? room except the door was locked usually it was never locked she put her ear next to the door to only hear a muffled convocation on the phone she recognized the voice on the other side of the call it was her Aunt Claire.
“So does she have to go?” Her father asked.
“Yes Leo I know this is hard for you but it has to happen.” Replied Claire
What has to happen? thought Arania
and suddenly the door unlocked. Arania awaited to see her father but he was still on the bed so who must of opened the door she brushed it off.
“So dad I’m ready to go.” She said there was no reply
she then walk over to the bed and sat next to him looking in his eyes sadness was all she saw it was happening again he was scilent and his breathing stopped.
Arania shook him mercilessly until she heard an exhale and then she just rested her head onto his shoulder. Leo then got up and began walking to the blue Honda with his daughter following Leo then hand gifts to Arania and started driving.
The drive was nice it was raining lightly for a flooding it was nice hearing the rain gently it calm her down.
After a good 20 minute drive the pulled up to a house it was her Aunt and Uncle’s it was still raining but that she got out of the car and hugged her dad tightly “Are you going to be okay?”
“Yes Rani I love you.” “Love you too dad.” And then he drove off.
Arania rung the door bell and it open blinding her with some pretty bright lights.
