Hey hey all! Recently, I’ve been doing some digging about my family’s roots and BOY have I found some interesting stuff. War medals, letters from ancestors, even old newspapers! And ofc plenty of photos.
Now, most of this comes from my dad’s side. Unfortunately, my mom’s side didn’t save a ton of stuff, and also their family is a bit smaller.
SO! Are you interested in learning about your family, too? Let me help you out!
NOTE: This is what I did to learn about my family. If this doesn’t work out well for you and/or you’re unable to find much, that’s not my fault. So don’t argue with me, I’ll block you.
Okay! Let’s get started.
The Basics
Assuming you have parents or some kind of relatives (if you don’t then idk why you’re reading this), ask them about their childhood! Especially grandparents, idk why but it’s a mutual thing that they all LOVE telling stories. A lot of the info I received comes from my grandpa: I can show her a picture and she’ll tell me a whole story about the people in it!
So!! Learn stuff from them, write it down too! Then when you get your hands on some stuff you can connect pieces of the story.
Then, find photo albums! Ofc you can ask your family about this if they’re ok with you handling some old stuff; my parents were hesitant but they trust me now.
My dad has a HUGE box of albums and unorganized photos. What I did was sort them INTO albums, which you can also do if you have a similar situation!! It’s a great way to learn more about your family.
Anyways, DIG IN!! It doesn’t matter if you have like three photos or a whole museum, because even one photo can tell a whole story (look at my grandma!)! And if you have a whole museum, well…good luck…
My grandpa fought in World War II (he was such a noble dude) so we had dozens of war medals and stuff to look through. If you have veterans in your family, you can ask them stuff too! (just be careful as some veterans are suffering from ptsd and might not be comfortable talking about what they did.) My grandpa is dead so we just looked through his stuff…rest in peace :(
Ok ok!! That’s the basics, here’s some more stuff you can do!
Extras!
